i have just taken a reading of HI on my meter i was told if i had no symptoms to re do test i did that and i still have a HI reading , can anyone tell me what im to do now i aint got a clue ??

High

What is the reading Steff?

it dnt tell me that it just say the word HI thats it , do i nedd to eat /drink something?

High

I am assuming you mean a blood sugar meter, if it says hi i would drink straight away not eat as this will push it higher, do you not have one that tells you the reading as one that just says high doesn't really help much as my meter thinks anything over 13 is high

no i just have this freestyle lite thing the nurse gave me 2 weeks ago , im assuming water to drink yeah

High

Anything that is sugar free huni, i drink loads of sugar free squash to get mine down

thank you im clucking around like a headless chicken i aint ever had this before

back in bit xx ty hun

Hi Steff

If my machine had read Hi on two consecutive occasions I would, if at all possible, go to the nearest Chemist to buy another machine to double-check the reading. Mine has said "Hi" once by mistake but if it had been correct this would have meant that my blood sugar was above 25. I always have two machines in case one goes wrong. I would also buy a bottle of urine ketones testing strips from the pharmacist to check for ketones. Although both the machine and the strips cost money at least you will then know whether you are dealing with a genuinely high sugar/ketones and can take appropriate action if you are.

Go wash your hands again- a real scrub.
Clean the end of your lancing device.
Change lancet
Test again.

This is just in case of any contamination (hand creams are often a culprit).

If HI, test on the other hand.

Don't exercise.

Also, read you meter instruction booklet - it should tell you the range that it will read as numbers, and state that above a certain level, it will simply read "HI".

I agree with suggestions to re-test clean hands, other hand, and if at all possible, re-test with a different meter. But, record results and tell diabetes team when possible - realistically, probably Monday, and drink sugar free drinks - I know milk in tea or coffee means a bit of sugar, but, not much, so I'd be tempted to have one, if you feel it necessary. If you have any other worrying symptoms, then contact NHS Direct or NHS 24 or out of hours GP, although some GPs have Sat morning surgeries, so if you're quick, you might be able to see one this morning. They would have a glucose meter, so could check your readings.

My first reaction was that it was probably contamination or possibly a meter problem. However, there is another question - did you eat anything before that test? How long had you been awake? Had you done anything since waking?

Was there a bottle of control solution with your meter.
If so, follow the instructions carefully.

Normally: shake well (the bottle, not you!), squeeze bottle and discard first couple of drops, use a drop on test strip applied at the end so that it is drawn up - not on the strip..

Hi Steff09
If you ask your DN she should give you a free meter or if not then I contacted the company called Medisense there address is
Medisense uk ltd

They sent me free of charge an OPTIUM Xceed meter and if you damage it or loose it they will replace it again free of charge. Hope this helps.:D

The xceed also takes ketone strips for that once in a while occasion when you need a ketone test. I asked medisense last year if they had some sort of part-ex deal for an old Optium I'd had for 5 years. I got them to send me 2 free xceeds. One stays on my desk at home and the other is always with me.

Steff - did you do a bedtime reading? What did you have for dinner & afterwards last night?

If you're running high like that in a morning at any time again, have an omelette. One made with cheese, onion, peppers raises my BG by about 1 mmol/l. If I have weetabix (as recommended by DSN, dietician, doc) it goes up 6 points instead.

If you start using Jennifer's protocol then your 1-hour post meal tests will probably show similar results.

So if you are running very high, something with very little carbs in is a good choice. It tends to be better than having nothing as well since it will stimulate second-phase insulin production and the overall effect may well be a reduction from the excessively high level.

Steff if your meter said HI, it wasn't being friendly 🙂
It means your bs is over 31 😱
OR it's a faulty reading. So No1 rule is retest straight away after washing your hands.
You do seem to be having a problem with higher numbers. I am wondering if you have been misdiagnosed. You need to go have a talk with your Dr and ask for a referal to diabetes specialist. So all the correct tests can be done to establish which type you are.

Did you do the test after reading the newspaper, as the print from the newspaper can alter your blood sugar readings. I remember once when I was waiting to see the DSN, I did my sugars and they were 15, and I hadnt eaten anything that would have put them at that level. She asked me if i had been reading a newspaper or the magazines in the waiting room and to go wash my hands which I did, took the test again and my sugars were 11 or 12...

Not necessarily 31 Sue. Different meters show "hi" at different levels. Some are 26 for example. Not that it makes a lot of difference in that area since its excessively high.

I'm wondering about the diagnosis too, hence the food questions.

However there is a possibility that its a long term high which has just rollercoastered out of control. I've seen another case recently where it does appear to be genuine T2 and a bit of control got the BG down to manageable levels, despite reaching near-hospitalisation levels from being uncontrolled.

Thinking about it, if Steff could post all BG test results along with food consumption from yesterday it might shed some light - unless of course there were no tests.

I'd follow some of the others, questioning your diagnosis... I was tried on diabetic meds before my full diagnosis and I had similar probs... eating well & exercising yet BM were high... so you should try and get some expert opinion,...
