Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Well tonight I headed to my apt with the DSN, the one whos a little, lets say rigid.

I had spent most the day at work doing fancy calcs to show why nova was better for me than apidra. I had research of others who had similar issues with it from forums. I took with me a list of advantages for having a half unit pen with a memory and I went in armed to the teeth with paperwork.

I got there and My DSN greeted me and introduced me to Alison , Good ol Alison. A name I only recognised from a few phone calls trying to use her best sales pitch to get me on the expert metre. She turns out shes not just a good sales woman (As I walked away with a ready to use expert metre in hand) But a breath of fresh air and a really really great diabetes specialist also. She was totally on my wave length and was not just appreciative but also very interested in the work ive been putting in the last 6 months. Where to DSN 1, I was becoming obsessed. No Id just like to live as long as possible please! The first thing was talking about why nova was better, before I could reach for my mound of papers, she said well, its your diabetes and you know yourself much better than we do... Something ive longed to hear from somebody for so so long. Nova, Back on the menu.

As we set up the metre the 3 of us, it came to the insulin unit increments, half units or whole, Dsn 1 said well the pens only whole units, and this was my chance to but in!!.... But I was too late Alison did it for me!! "Have you heard of the Echo pen? It does half units and has a 1 dose memory function!" , "Well Alison" I said... "Yes I have!".

We discussed my aims, even though DSN 1 called them unrealistic. The possibility of a pump in years to come (This is where DSN 1 comes in useful as she thinks Im a walking hypo waiting to happen, and certainly would be able to push the hypo criteria button for pump funding).

We talked about Fatty meals and delays, and splitting MDI doses (With Alison !) DSN 1 's Motto. 1 Get carbs and cals, 2. add up carbs 3. Inject it all on a 1 to 10 ratio, this shouldn't change throughout the day either, lavely jubly.

I was so so impressed and I hope I get to deal with her more (She is DSN1s Partner in crime and they work together)

What a breath of fresh air.

Nice to hear you had a positive experience! 🙂

Yay!

(Secretly I was hoping this appt would go like this - they often have for me when I've put some prep work in)

Terrific news Ben! Really good to hear, and what a difference from what you were expecting (and would probably have got if Alison hadn't been there! 😱)

Fantastic news Ben, glad to hear it was such a positive meeting.

Oh well - next time you book an appt, tell the clinic you want to see Alison!

Cheers guys, I think having a bit of confidence and doing my research gave them the impression I was safe going with my own judgments so well worth talking things through on here and doing my research.

Also just on another related note: Isnt it the worlds best feeling when they do a spot check blood test to "Test the machine" and it comes up at 5.3mmol !

Good cop/Bad cop ! :D

I wonder if Alison shares your thoughts about DSN1. Maybe her strengths lie in other areas. 🙂🙄

As TW says, ask for Alison every time. Or just ask DSN1 to check with Alison before you accept any changes.

If I were a newly diagnosed diabetic, and on top of having to accept my new issues I had to learn all about injecting, and carb counting & testign and keytones and what to look out for etc etc. The DSN 1 would be what I wanted. Plain and simple, straight forward and nothing too complex, working to a straight set of rules this would get me into it and in laymens terms. However I dont want simple any more, I want to get into the nitty gritty, and this is where she falls down for me personally..

Alison did seem to take charge and It did seem to become very much a 1 on 1 to the point where It was me trying to include DSN1 as It felt a little awquard...!

fantastic! ....And just ask for Alison for further appointments/reviews. I had to cancel my pump clinic last week as unwell....only to find my favourite, best ever and listening DSN has left.....gutted!! I wonder if her replacement will be anywhere near as good......somehow I doubt it! :(

Thats really annoying! Fingers crossed!

.... and are they replacing her .....

I hope so.....she was one of the hospital DSNs, I didn't bother with my health centre DSNs as frankly they are not very good! ....Real shame as I had a good relationship with her built up over a period of time. :(
