The topic of dietary fat is one of the most complicated for several reasons. Other food groups have fewer sub-categories; carbohydrates for example come, broadly speaking, in either simple or complex form. But there are far more types of fat - saturated, unsaturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated, essential - it goes on. Then there are the omegas (actually, polyunsaturated fats. The omega part refers to a specific type in that category) of which omega 3 has reached mythical status as a 'good fat'.

Last week there was a lot of discussion about saturated fats in food. But the term 'saturated fats' refers to an entire group of fats, or around 20, with the same chemical make-up; but not all saturated fats are created equal. While some are actually considered beneficial, others are less so.
