Hi
Just rang my Dr for for OGTT results all this woman could tell me "It's borderline"
Test readings. 6.3. 8.4
So that will be before and after Glucose what do these fingers mean in my case
Hope your all well
Christo.

I was diagnosed 16 years ago now with impaired glucose tolerance( pre diabetes), for the next 4 years I had year fasting blood glucose tests. I then tipped over to being diabetic. I can't recall the actual measurements for results. Though I believe they keep revising the levels.

I believe that on an OGTT your levels have to be 11.0 or over after two hours for a firm diagnosis to be made. You are below that, but 8.3 is still a little on the high side. I would say that, rather than waiting for a diagnosis to be given, start acting as though you have already been diagnosed. This isn't as bad as it might sound! By adjusting your carbohydrate intake to levels you tolerate well, and increasing your daily activity levels you should be able to improve your health and well-being, and avoid ever reaching the point of a full diagnosis of diabetes 🙂 Remember that there is nothing in a duet that is suitable for a person with diabetes that is not a good diet for someone without it 🙂 Take control now and you won't need to worry about the test results in the future 🙂

I didn't realise they still used this method for diagnosis. My GP said the new advice is to use a Hba1c test now as standard. Has that been suggested to you Christo?

I think Northerner means "diet" not "duet", although playing musical instruments and dancing can count as exercise / activity, which is also important in tackling impaired glucose tolerance / type 2 diabetes. Your weight is also a consideration. If you are overweight, then losing some weight will reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes (while remembering that about 20% of people diagnosed with T2D are normal weight at the time) as well as easing pressure on joints and reducing chance of heart attack, stroke, some cancers etc.

I had this HBa1c test but not sure if this is standard, nothing was said about it.
Christo.

Not sure what it means HBA1c 42 or is it 4.2
Quite fed up I will not have these results until next week. Do you understand these numbers ?

Yes Christo, if it's 42 on the Hb test, that's the equivalent of 6.0 and it's excellent. The cut off for a diabetes diagnosis on the Hba1c test is usually 48. But be aware these figures don't correspond to the levels found on a finger prick meter which is why it's confusing.

I hope your results are good. It may be that the doctor may feel you're pre-diabetic and have the opportunity to get it under control by lowering your carb/sugar intake and taking more exercise so don't be panicking yet!

Amigo.
Thank you, there is hope for me yet, I think your right, will let you know next week when I have the results..not eating white bread any more eating brown, rice is also brown,I now enjoy an Apple every day, quite a few changes to make, yet to try brown pasta hope I like it.I shall have to get used to this diet ! No potatoes !
Christo.

The best advice I was given is to make small changes. Luckily you're in the position of not actually being diagnosed T2 yet. Smaller changes are more sustainable than drastically changing your diet. I started off changing everything to the brown version, like you and swapping regular potatoes for sweet potatoes (which I think taste much nicer anyway!) I also swapped to diet fizzy pop although I have now cut out nearly all fizzy drinks expect Pepsi max! You seem to be heading in the right direction though so well done 🙂

It IS possible to control type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise. There are a number of people on this forum that do. Good luck with your results on Tuesday. Oh and I use sweet potato exactly the same as I would regular potatoes but they have fewer carbs 🙂

It certainly is possible! I've come off Metformin and am controlling it with diet & exercise - I just wish I'd known about this forum when I was first diagnosed 🙄. And just by the by, I've been trying celeriac instead of sweet potato as my numbers were going up on it, though Rosie's right about it having fewer carbs than a normal spud 🙂.

All the best for Tuesday, Christo.
