Today I have craved sweet things - sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes.

I did not have anything sweet in the house (only healthy diabetic meals), but oh dear, I could have eaten for Britain. Healthy meals were OK but that is not what I wanted. I managed to ignore the desire to go out to the shops. I have had more 'Options' hot chocolate drinks thank I should have probably.

How do you manage when you get a bout of the munchies?

Hazel

Hi Hazel
Don't you just hate it having those moments when you fancy a chocolate fix
I tend to get through loads of sugerfree gum now instead.

Yes me too, plenty of sugar free mints , gum and sugar free jelly mmm 🙂

Hi Hazel,

when I get he urge to eat things like chocalate, prawns, wotsits, etc etc, I just go ahead and eat I CHECK MY BLOOD, later if its up which it is usely 9.3 I am bad at times and just go ahead and ignore all the rules, but pay for it later on . I always say to myself (Miker its just not worth it) but this is just me ( silly I know ) its odd wriing this as my wife is called hazel also

take care

Miker:D:D:D

Hazel, there are days when the munchies hit badly for me too so, like you, I tend not to keep too much temptation in the house and then have to avoid the urge to go round to the corner shop and get something "just this once".

I've had most success in managing those days when I've diverted myself and just got busy doing something else - bit of weeding, some sewing, reading, housework, going out for a walk (without any money tho!) or having a siesta. Oddly - cooking also works for me so preparing tea in advance will often settle me again as my munchies usually hit mid-afternoon

Sometimes though I just give in disgracefully - then I try to make an occasion of it and sit down and really enjoy my indulgence with a cup of tea so I don't just eat mindlessly. I then try to adjust what I eat for the rest of the day but sometimes the "what the hell" mindset takes over.

Strange thing is - when I've had an indulgence I often realise after that I didn't really enjoy it that much after all and would rather have had a piece of fruit after all

I 'went vegetarian' a few years back (I'm not any more), and found that there were particular meals that I really missed. I decided that I would have a week of indulgence each year to satiate the desire, and had chicken vindaloo, fish 'n' chips, sausage and mash, chilli con carne etc. and really enjoyed it, then didn't feel the need for a while afterwards.

I've found it's pretty much the same now with diabetes. I allow myself periods of indulgence - not just once a year, but every now and then - rather than perpetually fretting about it. It's finding the balance that's difficult, and I think you can only do this if you don't let the desire build up too much - so have the occasional biscuit. I find that having a chocolate biscuit is a good idea rather than buying a bar of chocolate, as I get the chocolate fix, but by eating less chocolate. Individually wrapped biscuits, like a penguin, breakaway etc. are best as you feel less inclined to eat more than one.🙂

Unless you bought a multi-pack! You must have supreme self-discipline Northener! Best just buy one. That's the problem with the choccy biscuits too - hard to stick at 1.

I agree that it does help to indulge a craving now and again rather than let it build up, but just get the smallest amount you can. I also found this with loosing weight - better to adjust portions and basically eat healthily, rather than deny yourself anything, becasue you'll only crave it the more.

If I get the craving for sweet things, I eat dried apricots or dates, figs - however, you still need to watch your sugar levels after these.

Good luck...

i cant help but munch on raisins and also sugar free gum as well very good , I am also very weak when it comes to those alpen bars i have 1 a week and theres a 4 pack am i bad? :D:D

Not sure I can help much as I tend not to resist, I eat chocolate almost every day. I find if I deny myself things then I end up bingeing

Nikki, i also eat chocolate most days. Not as much as before, i dont tend to crave things ike mars, snickers etc. Just have few squares of dark choccy after tea, receently been eating the small bounty bars, just dose for them and im fine. I dont deny myself any food i want, but do try to eat a healthy diet too. :D

I find if I fancy chocolate I have to have it NOW then I am satisfied with a small bar. If I try to put it off then I want a big bar or three. Chocolate or any sweets are fine as a treat in moderation, and as part of a balanced diet. We would all go crazy if we didn't have sweet treats sometimes
