Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hey everyone, it has been a while since I last posted, I had y HbA1 checked over a week ago and when I was diagnosed type 2 my HbA1 level was 135 now it has come down to 53 since end March so I am going in the right direction.
I am going on a girly holiday n Friday to Prague and my girlfriends want to go for cocktails, rather than be the odd one out and not have one are there any cocktails that are not too bad to drink?
I know that vodka, lime and soda is ok but it is not quite a cocktail.
Thanks for any help

Alcohol lowers bgl so you 'should' be ok, I would stick to Gin & Vodka bassed cocktails without a lot of sugar syrup.

Be careful with any that contain fruit juice, might only be a small amount but you'll be surprised the impact it can have.
If any have soda mixers, coke or lemonade, ask for diet version.
Id suggest a Long Island Iced Tea made with diet coke. Just don't have too many as they are extremely potent!

Hurricanes would be right out (was one of my favorites & home :-( )
Margarita may be ok, not sure about the sugar content of the triple-sec, perhaps I may do some testing 🙂

If you’re looking to add a syrup ‘le sirop’, which is French in a metal can now sell sugar free versions with no aspartame. They may help if needed for any cocktails that need syrup.

So when did Prague move to France? LOL

There are a lot more S/F driks available in French supermarkets, though not much at all in French bars other than sometimes the ruddy ubiquitous diet Coke. However not sure if Czechoslovakia is well supplied or not.

I used to be a bit of a social drink... Well a lot actually! Since diagnosis I have been tee total it don't mix with Alcohol! TBH I don;t miss it and its a buzz seeing others falling about! downside.............. TAXI JOHN?

Rather than thinking for yourself, any decent bar in Prague will serve you a low carb cocktail if you ask. It’s the mixers that contain most carbs, so they’ll use the diet versions. As has been said, alcohol tends to lower your blood glucose.

My personal favourite (before I gave up alcohol) was a Negroni, equal proportions of Red Vermouth, Campari and whisky (or gin). Plus ice and slice of orange. Never affected my BG one way or the other, but then one was always enough.o_O

Czechoslovakia
Showing your age there Jenny 😱 😉 It's actually supposed to be 'Czechia' these days, although apparently nobody calls it that 😱 🙂

Hope you are having a great time @samanthag46 ! 🙂 I love Prague 🙂 I don't drink any more either, but only cocktail I think I have ever had was a Tom Collins (big Hemingway fan, and I was in Harry's Bar in Venice, so no other choice really 🙂)

I thought Hemingway favoured a Daquiri or Mojito, certainly in Cuba. In Europe it was apparently a simple whisky and soda.

He said he drank to make people interesting.😎

Anyway, what were you doing in Harry’s Bar? That’s even out of my price range:D

Having read Hemingway's entire oeuvre, including 'Across the River and Into the Trees' how could I not visit Harry's when in Venice? He has a Tom Collins in that book. I think the drink cost about £5 (1992), so not bad 🙂 A really nice experience too - clearly I wasn't the only Hemingway fan who went in there for the same reason, and they didn't frown on backpackers. Couldn't have afforded to eat there though! 😱

Hi everyone , haven't been on for ages unfortunately , and I realised coming on now how I've missed your banter 🙂 . I also have a question about beverages . Which is the best for diabetics - black tea with milk or green tea ? Does anyone know please ?

Welcome back, mumpat888.🙂

Either, but I don’t put milk in tea. The small amount of milk will have negligible effect on your BG, so don’t worry.🙂

Cold green tea is lovely with No.3 gin, ice and a slice of cucumber. (Just thought I’d mention that for the topers above:D)

Not bad? That’s £22 in modern money. Hope you made it last:D

Hello MikeyB , nice to be back . Thanks for your advice although I may pass on the gin ! I am trying to have mostly green tea but I can't do without a good old cup of "proper tea" in the morning ! 🙂

Hi @mumpat888 🙂 I drink copious amounts of 'builder's tea', PG tips at the moment, with milk. Green tea is a totally different drink in my book, and not one that I like particularly, although it is supposed to have some health benefits 🙂 I don't really figure in the small amounts of milk in my tea when considering my blood sugar levels - I think the stress-reducing benefits of a good, strong cup of tea probably do my levels far more good than harm! 🙂 Best way to find out, of course, would be to test before and after drinking the various options, although it probably wouldn't register enough to show (I'm guessing!) 🙂
