Type 2
hi guys
Blood test Monday
Doc rang me Tuesday
Tuesday night in hospital on a drip
9 on the key tones
37 on the mol/l
Two nights on . And blood sugar came down. Key tones down to .6
So they let me go home
Seems like a really bad dream
But it isn’t
Wow
Trying to get my head round it all

Anitram is spot on. One thing this forum is really good at is helping people to get their head round things. You can ask what you like, when you like and somebody will be around to give you pointers.

Lost all the weight over last few months
Bg is still up
Was drinking to much beer and fizzy energy drinks
Then eating sweets and chewing gum to get rid of the metallic taste in my mouth. Massive sugar overload in 3 months
Just triggered it
Small doses of insulin. To bring me down gently

Sounds as though problem identified
And you have a task ahead of you.
And insulin.
How are you feeling?

Hi @Simmo66 and welcome to the forum

May I ask what tests they did to determine you were Type 2? just a Type 2 doesn't usually present in the way you did

Sugar isn't the whole problem its total carbohydrates you have to be careful of as all carbohydrates turn to glucose in the body
xx

Hospital did all tests . Went in Tuesday night. Came out Thursday tea time
What were the results of your c-peptide or GAD tests?

Your symptoms and results do fall more in line with how a Type 1 presents rather than a Type 2
xx

I agree with @Kaylz It sounds to me like you may well be Type 1. Sudden loss of weight and admission to hospital with such high ketones are symptoms of Type 1. I know it will all be a foreign language at the moment and it is easy to assume you are Type 2 because of your age and your high sugar intake recently but it is very important to get a correct diagnosis as early as possible to get the most relevant treatment and support. Type 1 is only diagnosed by doing special tests which are a C-peptide and an antibody (GAD) test If these have not been done then you need to ask for them to be done or be referred to a diabetic consultant.

Sounds a bit naughty those figures @Simmo66, I also agree with @Kaylz & @rebrascora. Worth asking the question, have you got the results of my c-peptide and GAD results, if not can we arrange it please? Watch the amount of carbs in your diet and when reading foods that are labelled with the traffic light system, turn the product over and look for Nutrients. In that nutrient panel will show how many total carbohydrates are in the product and normally immediately below that will show of which are sugars, do not count the sugars as well as the carbs, only the carbs you need too count. Very confusing we know but you will soon get the hang of it, if you are eventually diagnosed with a different type we can have a different conversation. let us know how you are.

I was in a similar situation this week in hospital too, blood sugar at 19, ketones at 6 and admitted with DKA. Both levels have gone down but I was discharged from hospital being told it's more than likely a Type 1 although awaiting results of tests (believe it's c-peptide and GAD) on Tuesday. Given the levels OP has spoken about, I'm confused at whether I am T1 or could be T2.

The testing you had done will tell you if you are Type 1. If they come back negative then you are likely Type 2. The important thing is that they do the tests for Type 1. I think the GAD takes about 3 weeks but the C-peptide should be back in a few days.
A DKA admission usually indicates Type 1 so it is likely your tests will come back positive.
I assume/hope they have given you insulin??

This is why we are enquiring about OP's test results as they say Type 2 under the avatar but how he presented leads more towards Type 1 diabetes, DKA can happen in Type 2 although VERY rare as they still produce insulin whereas a Type 1 doesn't, I have never heard of a Type 2 with such high ketones and are only really reported in Type 2 if the diabetes is advanced which if it was there would've been symptoms going on for more than a few months so that's why we think the OP should query this as some doctors wont do the tests and just put people down as Type 2 based on age etc xx

OP is in 50s rather than 20s, so age misconception more likely - might not be surprising if from GP, but one would hope a hospital team would be more clued-up!

Your symptoms with weight loss @Simmo66 seem very mush like T1.

Well worth asking. If you have had Gad antibody test and c-peptide that should make it clear.
It is good that they have you on insulin, and in the early stages, even if it is T1, you May only need small amounts, as you could have some beta cells working alongside the insulin injected.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
