Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi - was diagnosed with type2 diabetes twenty years ago and just been jogging along with it - taking it semi-seriously (its in family history so expected it!) now i am getting older I am finding it difficult with toiletting issues! Getting worried to go out too far from the loo! dont want to be like this (i take 1000metformin,2xgliclazide(80mgs each and ix jardiance) have heard recently about the once a week injection - would that help please?

Welcome to the forum.

How have you been with controlling your BG levels? Do you know what your HbA1c is for example?
What's your diet like etc?

That can help us give you suggestions of things to perhaps try.

Hi - thanks - my hbA1c is 70- cholesterol 3.2 and I have been a vegetarian for 60 years! One of the first!

So what's your carb intake like do you know? Being a vegetarian could be good but it might be that you're making choices which are higher than others in carb content which is giving you an HbA1c at those levels.
It might be that if you manage your BG levels lower then your other issues may diminish.

You’re probably right - carb intake is likely too much pasta/pastry etc to bulk up -I have downloaded some low carb recipes so will certainly try harder!

There are others on here who take glic and jardiace as well as metformin so they'll probably be better placed to give advice. I only take metformin (modified release) and I try to at least be aware of my carb intake even if I don't manage to keep it low (enough) some days. But certainly switching out the pasta and pastry might help!

There are some stunning low carb versions of almost everything out there!

My grandfather was a lifelong vegetarian born in 1873 and my Dad born in 1908. In those days people did not really understand what it meant.

Your HbA1C is certainly high given the amount of medication you are taking and as suggested looking more carefully at your diet with a view to reducing carbohydrates. Unless you are careful some veggie recipes are quite high carb but there are plenty of low carb ones if you look for them by searching for low carb or keto veggie recipes and there are some in the food forum here (tab at the top left)
This link may also help you find somethings which suit you. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Had a lifelong vegetarian in the extended family and mum made him a lovely range of dishes to choose from - she forgot that chicken stock cubes were made with real chicken.
I also flirted with being vegetarian for a while myself. Cue mum saying "so you don't want roast chicken but you can have chicken soup yes?" and "We're having lamb so if I do you fish is that OK?"

Same with my mum - she refused to "pander" to my whims - thinking i would grow out of being veggie - she would cook dishes and then just pick the meat out to offer me!

LOL at your Mum Colin

We had similarly befuddled relatives when my youngest went vegan. “Can you eat fruit?” “What is there that you DO eat then?”

Well done on wrestling your glucose levels over the years @OldStationClose

Has your HbA1c always been around that level? How are things holding up generally? Feet and eyes still OK?

Have you been having toilet upset for a while? Have your meds been tweaked or changed recently?

Reminds me of The Royle Family on TV when the Grandma was still around, and hearing that the son's latest girlfriend was vegetarian asked Mrs Royle, 'Can she eat wafer thin ham, Barbara?' I felt then that the understanding of vegetarianism must have moved forwards somewhat since I was a child, otherwise that sentence in the script could not have been so utterly hilarious.

That was the exact same thing that came to mind too Jenny. Our eldest daughter flirted with vegetarianism for fourteen years, from age 7! When we holidayed in France they just didn’t get it at all. We asked for a croque monsieur sans le jambon, it came with the ham! I’m assuming ( hoping) it’s better now, but as it is she met a farmer when she was 21 and suddenly started eating meat! All those years of me using separate spoons, pans etc and making sure the biscuits didn’t have gelatine in. I never ever resented it and found some great vegetarian recipes I still use today. Mind you when she mentioned becoming a vegan I said nothing, packed her jam sandwiches for her school lunch and took her brand new leather boots off her. She lasted half a day!

I told mum once I was going to be a second level vegan and not eat anything which cast a shadow.

Thanks everybody for your comments - i have given myself a good talking to and will try harder with carb intake! Also my diabetic nurse increased my gliclazide recently which may have contributed to the toilet issues - also discovered i have been taking glic at wrong time of day - so I have remedied that as well. Good to know there are you lot out there to chat to! Take care

We're always here and we're always happy to chat!

Its unlikely your Hba1c affects the loo.
And if you haven't changed your diet recently, I wouldn't put that in the mix yet.
Twenty years type 2 you must know what works for you by now!

The glicozade can cause diarrhea issues, but it should settle down.
How long have you been on the changed dose?
The other med to check is the Metformin.
Are you on slow release?
And if you are, have you actually been issued that by the chemist?
They do mix it up sometimes.
It's worth going back to the doctor's to discuss med changes if none of that works, or even if it's completely unrelated.
Changing your diet won't affect anything short term, all you can hope is it'll bring your Hba1c down, which means you may possibly be able to reduce meds in the long term.
