Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I have just had my spleen and pancreas removed which means I am now have full Type 1 diabetes.

I have been told that if my bed time sugar reading is low (<4) I should have a snack, but not something like biscuits which have a lot of fat. So I am looking for recommendations for bed time snacks.

At the moment I have tried crackers and marmite or a banana. If I just have a banana do I still need to take a Creon tablet ( I normally take 4 for a meal)?

No - what you actually have is Type 3 diabetes since Type 1 is only caused by an auto-immune attack.

There are a number of T3 members on the forum who can advise you far better than an ordinary T1 like me, as we don't need to tale Creon because that bit of our pancreas is still working very well.

A couple of fat free suggestions though - a small amount of orange juice (100ml-ish) or 2 or 3 jelly babies would bring our BG up very quickly.

Hi The_petal, welcome to the forum 🙂 Normally, I'd suggest something like a jelly baby and then follow it up with something like a slice of bread and peanut butter to keep your levels elevated overnight, but I'm not sure what might be preferable when you are using Creon. As mentioned, we have several 'Creonistas' here on the forum so hopefully they will be along to advise (@mikeyB , @eggyg 🙂

Welcome @The_petal. It’s tough being type 3c, I had most of my pancreas and spleen removed almost 11 years ago and I am still here to tell the tale! I personally don’t take Creon with snacks but that is just after years of trial and error. I take 4 x 25k per meal, maybe more if especially fatty. I never take less than 3. As for snacks, I hate bananas so can’t recommend but crackers sound good or a slice of Burgen bread toasted with a thin spread of Whole Earth crunchy peanut butter, hardly any sugar but obviously does have fat. So a Creon might be in order until you have it sussed. Ifyou have any questions please ask away, you’re not alone. Elaine.

Thanks for pointing out I am Type 3C, there are times when a label helps!

I was diagnosed as type 2 even though I knew I couldn’t be, I also knew I wasn’t type 1 as Jenny pointed out we aren’t auto immune. For the purposes of getting all the help I require I have only recently been re diagonosed as type 1. It’s been a fight though! How long ago was your op? How is your day to day understanding of diabetes? Have they mentioned that Creon may upset your blood glucose? Have you been offered a carb counting course DAFNE or the equivalent? Sorry for all the questions but it’s a lot to take in especially after such major surgery. I manage my diabetes quite well, thanks to these lovely folks on here, it’s my stomach problems that get me down. My little bit of remaining pancreas is all but dead and I don’t know how much insulin or enzymes it actually produces making life just a tad more difficult! But I get on with my life and am just glad to still be here. 🙂

Welcome to the Creonista gang🙂

I agree with Eggy. The first thing to do is sort out a carb counting course. Creon is very much a personal thing. The first thing to say, is you can’t overdose. You need to use enough to stop the bowel symptoms, that’s all. Some folk need more, some less.

I wouldn’t know about bananas, haven’t had one for years, but if you find you get loose bowel motions after eating one, then take Creon after eating. Experimentation won’t do you any harm at all. Best of luck🙂

(For some reason, my spellchecker changes Creon to Freon. Drink that stuff and you’ll die:confused:)
