Hi, I'm recently diagnosed type 3c following necrotising pancreatitis and removal of my pancreas and gall bladder. I am looking for travel insurance but so far I have only found 2 specialist medical insurance companies who are prepared to offer any cover and both are too expensive, could anyone point me in the right direction.

Hi Simon from a fellow Type 3c, distal pancreatectomy, splenectomy and gall bladder whipped out! All this happened 11 and a half years ago. I didn’t go away for about 16 months after my op, I just googled travel insurance for pre existing conditions then I called them didn’t try and do it on line. I obviously told them everything but because I didn’t have cancer ( my tumour, thankfully, was pre cancerous so no treatment needed) and my spleen had been healthy before they removed it, just in case, I was covered. I don’t remember how much it was but if it had been extortionate I would have remembered! After 2 years it gets easier and cheaper my last trip abroad in March to Portugal for 8 nights cost me £8! I don’t have any diabetic complications haven’t seen a doc about my pancreas ( or the bit I have left) for donkeys years. All insurance companies will cover you but at a cost. Do not EVER think about not declaring anything, I was a travel agent in another life and have seen the consequences of this. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your reply. So far only 2 of about 6 have offered cover. The problem seems to be the lack of medical understanding with these companies. For example I have non-cirrhotic portal hypertension, this means that although I have portal hypertension there is no damage to the liver. This option is not available, if you have PH you must therefore have liver damage according to the insurers. This alone added £400 on to the premium. As you say I must declare everything but being honest just complicates things. This is only 1 of several similar issues.
While writing this my wife is talking to yet another company who has refused cover.

It was a similar thing with my spleen, they couldn’t understand why I had had it removed if it was healthy, they kept asking me questions from a drop down box, “ was it ruptured/ damaged/ enlarged” etc etc. The answer was NO NO NO! I eventually got through to them but it was a long process, I was only going to Cyprus not Outer Mongolia! I understand your frustration totally. Touch wood you will eventually get someone who understands, could your GP/ consultant help with a letter perhaps? They will charge but it won’t be as much as £400. Good luck in your quest.

Thanks again for your speedy reply. This is already with the help of my consultants. I saw one of them today and asked him to write everything down as clearly as possible but still no joy. We'll sort it, will probably just end up paying.
