My upper molar on the rhs is very sensitive and when i mentioned this to the dentist he mentioned it is due to nerve pain and what he did was take out the existing old filling and put a new one in. Unfortunately, it is still not right and he mentioned that if it hasn't improved i may need root canal treatment :-( I've hardly ever had problems with my teeth (apart from a wisdome tooth problem years ago), is it because i'm diabetic that i'm starting to get problems?

Carina how often do you brush them etc etc, I have a very similier problem at the moment a tooth at the back of the mouth is very sore and sensitive and when I brush my teeth this tooth always bleeds, im one who avoids the dentist at all costs so i will suffer through it, I know we can have bother with our teeth but i think thats if you dont look after your mouth etc.Ive no experience with fillings btw

hello Steff, i floss my teeth every morning which is something i never used to do and i have a battery operated toothbrush which dentists recommend and i use corsodol mouthwash which stains teeth badly but my dentist says is really good so i think i'm doing all the right things. I hate dentists and they are sooo expensive. I'm not going to rush in to have this root canal treatment and see how long i can get away with it - worse case scenario, i'll just have it taken out.

Hi Carina, as with everything there is always the possibility that infections can set in more easily with people with diabetes. I had a lot of problems with my teeth in the 2 years leading up to my diagnosis, and it's more than likely my levels were quite high during this period. Since diagnosis I have had no problems at all. So, this may be a problem you would have had even if you were not diabetic, but diabetes may have made it more likely.

I hope the tooth is sorted soon, there is nothing worse than toothache!

Last time I had a tooth taken out, I was given a couple of options. Although the dentist could have made a lot more from doing root canal for me, it only had a limited life and I was better off having the tooth taken away. Nextt ime you go and he talks about root canal ask him about other options too.

Hi Carina,
sorry to hear you have tooth problems :(
Have you tried the sensodyne tooth paste? If not might be worth a try.
As to a root canal filling, from what I have been told they very rarely work. So a waste of money
Hope your tooth is sorted soon though.

I have a few successful root canal treatments - all sucessful.
Carina, when I had gom problems my dentist recommended Corsodyl dental gel -use an amount the size of a split pea - instead of the mouth rinse that can stain teeth, but ask your dentist or dental hygeinist

I've had two root canals done - one lasted about 12 years and the other tooth is still there 🙂 The one I eventually had removed had a number of problems as the tooth becomes more brittle once it has been root-filled and bits kept breaking off and needing fillings. Interestingly, the reason I had it removed eventually was because there was a re-emergence of the infection that had originally required the root fill several years earlier, when I developed an abcess. My dentist said there must have been a tiny bit of infection lying dormant, and pre-diagnosis my BG levels were high, encouraging the flare up! It's the only adult tooth I've had removed.

I would say that, if it can be done, then a root canal is worth having. When you have a tooth removed the support for the remaining teeth goes, so the gap can result in problems for the other teeth. My dentist said I could have a replacement put in - for about ?2,000! 😱
