Hello all, my brain has given up on me today.

I am having some tomatoe soup for my lunch, 21g of carbs but I cant remember if I should count those according to the DAFNE rules, or if as it is veg they are ignored?

I always bolus for soup, some have more carb than others....i would definitely bolus for tomato soup

It doesn't matter where a carb comes from, be it veg or sweets. If it's a carb, it'll affect your blood sugar.

I made a home made soup last week, with similar carbs, maybe less, I gave insulin, but only as I am on the pump, if it was MDI, I probably wouldn't because the processing of the glucose in the vegetables take too long for the normal novorapid action, and so would have left it up to my Levemir to process.......

Dont have that now, so bolus for these items needs to be considered....

Ultimately, its all about trial and error, no insulin may work, but it may not....

I think I was getting confused with lentil soup. I remember at my DAFNE course there being a discussion about pulses and that the DAFNE guidelines said not to count for pulses as they are so low GI. I always found this v weird advice.

It makes sense when you think about it.....

The digestion is too slow for an insulin like novorapid or humalog to deal with given that they start to work about 15 minutes in, peak at 1-2 hours and expire by 4-5 hours...
