This morning I had a retinopathy appt which ive been waiting for for a while. Ive been really worried about it as I had originally been told i had new vessels. As it turns out, it looks ok. Some changes, but the new vessels arnt bad ones. Im just to be observed, and have another appt in 6 months.... Im so happy!!

However, has the stress leading up to this led to a funny bg result today..

I woke up at 5.4 after holding fairly steady through the night. I went to bed at 6.8, tested at 1am, was 6.9, and then woke up at 5.4. I took my 3 u apidra about 20 mins before eating, and ate approx 35g carb cheerios cereal.

My ratio is somewhere around the 1 / 10 mark, but I am tinkering with this.

I went for the test. I did feel nervous and worried but probably not quite as much as I thought I would have been. 2 hours after eating I tested and I was at 8 (This was after coming out of the hospital feeling very relieved)... at 11.45 the time i usually test before lunch before eating at 12 - 12.15 i was at 12mmol! Why! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY.... (These whys could go on for ages and ages and ages..)

Any thoughts? I dont normally eat cheerios, I usally eat all bran or similar, and Im usually ok with these. I read someone got on well with cheerios so thoguht id give them a go!

Why why why why why!!

I can only say that for me, all breakfast cereals have to be avoided. No matter if I follow weights/carb portions/ratios religiously, I always end up high.

I have given up trying different ones, and now go for toast, or bacon/sausage buns, where I can accurately weigh the relevant bread/bun.

Of course, the stress and worry of the eye appt. I would expect to have upped the levels as well. Congrats on good result for that though!

My bloods are all over the place due to stress as well x

..... It may well have been the stress of the appointment, if your ratios are right (I'm sure they are). Cheerios have always been fine with me, I don't usually get a spike. This morning I had crunchy nut cornflakes (very, very rare I have them) and 2 hours post prandial I was 8.4! 😱

I think it was your post I saw Phil... So I totally blame yoU!! 😛 Only kidding.

The weird thing was my post prandrial of 8.0 for me was good, I was happy with that., and I would have expected to see me drop another 2mmol by lunch in the lovely zone of 6.0mmol. So Im baffled @ the 12mmol reading, I even re tested and it came up at 11. something!

.....are you sure it wasn't the orange juice? 😉 Might be worth trying cheerios out on another more routine day, I have to say it is the only cereal that I don't spike from other than porridge.

Definatley going to give it another go tommorow. I hope it does work for me like it does with you, cus I love the stuff!!

Suppose it could have been the monster sized slice of chocolate gatuex with ice cream on the side,... but I was feeling a bit sorry for myself with the appt coming up!!

...ha,ha!! good luck! I didn't use to like them, quite plain...but now I love 'em 🙂

From what you've said Benny I suspect other factors may have been in play - Hello Mr Liver, thanks for messing up my morning completely!

Stress can do funny things, so that could well have been a factor.

If it's a food you want to eat, I guess you've just got to keep plugging away with the experiments till you find a way of getting it to behave (or give up with it - whichever comes first!)

Stress can easily do that. In fact - that was quite a modest rise for Mr Cortisol. Or of course, he could decide to send you mega-hypo. And like the imponderables on QI - (echo chamber on) - Nobody Knows .......

Of course, then there's the stress of the relief when they said it was OK after all. Ooooh yes, it doesn't have to be BAD stress you know! GOOD stress (relief, excitement) can cause it too. All in the day to day life of a normal diabetic. After all, you wouldn't want it to be easy, would you? A challenge is good for our brains, keeps us on our toes, thank you so much ..... Pish. (only printable word I can think of)

Forget it and try the Cheerios again.

Great news about the eyes !

I was going to be clever and pretend I knew what Cortisol was, But in the end I googled it! ...

Thanks - Im feeling relieved, and even more inspired to keep the work up and keep in check.

To make matters worse today, I injected a couple of unit correction + 4 u for my 35g carb lunch. And 2 hours post prandrial - 14 mmol...

WTH!

Glad your eye appt went well.

My blood was sky high the other week after an appt too, definitely the stress factor here. I notice it at other times if I am nervous/stressed too - it's just a total PITA!

Sometimes there is no easy reason to fathom....I'd try the cheerios again on another more normal day too.

Hey Laura... Ive never really noticed it before - But I swear hospital / doctor appts send my body haywire these days! Never really noticed it with the bgs, but mnot saying it hasnt happened. But I swear, I monitor my Blood pressure at home and its OK, I get to the doctors and they think im about to explode or something!

Im going to have cheerios tommorow, whether my BG likes it or not!!

....any other reason? going down with a virus, cracked syringe, dodgy site?

The disposible pen is near the end of its life, Its back to the "How reliable is apidra question" Im still not convinced, Its like im injecting water sometimes.

I feel OK, not like im coming down with anything.

The only other thing was I had a really horrible hypo yesterday afternoon, but i checked through the night and seemed pretty stable - Is a rebound 12 - 14 hours later possible?

1. When I was on MDI, I thought the disposable pens were rubbish can you try to get lily pens or something like?
2. I've never bounced after 12-14 hours...my bounce normally kicks in and peaks at 4 hours or so....but maybe a possibility  ....hope your bs comes down soon.

Took another correction and they are on the way back down to earth now.

Should be ok by Dinner hopefully. Time to chuck this one and get another out the fridge.

What are lily pens?
