I am going for a Thai meal tonight with friends from work. Does anyone know the 'hidden' things in this ssort of meal. I know most of it will be obvious but I wondering if it is likely to be loaded with sugar or other things I will have to count.

I've not been for this type of meal out since having my pump so any advice would be great. 🙂

Most sauces will have sugar in them - even the ones that are salty to taste! How much is in each dish is variable and will depend entirely on the chef. Pad Thai always however tastes very sweet to me so you can expect that to have quite a lot of sugar in it.

However, your main area to watch should be the rice. Rice is the fundamental part of Thai food and what we would consider the meal (ie. the meat and veg) is really just elaborate seasoning for your bowl of rice.

Depending on the chef, you might also want to watch out for cornflour - this is often used by Chinese chefs to dust the meat prior to frying, which is what what makes meat in Chinese dishes so moist. You may find some Thai chefs do the same.

Another thing to be aware of is chillies. I personally find a large amount of chillies seems to drop my insulin resistance. Thai food done right should be pretty spicy, so you may or may not experience the same effect.

I suppose the sauces could have things like coconut milk in it and some sugar......

I think if you really want to be under total control choosing something you know the rough value of is best....

I never really have much success with meals out.......

There have been a few times, but they were just lucky......

Enjoy when the time comes......🙂

Thanks for that info. I will definitely avoid the rice because I know that does crazy things to my BG. I love eating out so have to start learning how to manage it again! 🙂

I looked out for the things you said, took a wild guess at number of units to take and it worked. Lovely meal and 8.2 before going to bed so thank you for advice. :D
