i am still new to this. i have only had my meter for three days and have been using it up to 4 times a day, as per my doctor's instructions.

i have two issues - first, certain fingers are beginning to ache, and second, i am still not sure what mmol/l readings i should be aiming for.

with regards the fingertips, can anyone tell me how i do this multiple, frequent testing thing without pain and soreness? my lancing device came with a separate attachment for use on different parts of the body. which parts might they be then?

as for the mmol/l, i have noted the target readings espoused by this site, diabetes uk, the bupa site and a couple of american sites, but there are variations, and since we are talking of decimal place variations in some cases, it suggests to me that these small amounts are significant. so my humble enquiry, fellow diabetizens, is in asking u what figures u aim for, what mmol/l readings are acceptable to you?

if for example u wake up in the morning with a fasting blood glucose reading of 5.9 mmol/l, would u be whooping it up and high-fiving the postman, or concerned it was a a little high? or perhaps neither?

any perspectives on this would be much appreciated.

Hi Timbla,

First of all I'd be high fiving anyone around at the time if I got a fasting reading of 5.9, so well done for that. When I was first diagnosed I was told to aim for between 4 and 7 before meals and below 10mmol 2 hours after meals. I believe the more recent advice is is below 8.5 after meals and maybe to test 1 hour after meals rather than 2 hours. Anything below 4 is classed as a hypo.

As for finger testing, you can test either side of any finger except your fore finger and thumb because these are your 'pincers'. Not the front (pad) either because this is where most of your nerve endings are so it's more likely to hurt. Does your needle pen have gradients? If so, try a smaller setting and see if you still get a decent sample from that. Mine goes from 1 to 6 and I've found that 1.5 is plenty to get enough of a sample to test. If you have an alternative site adapter thingy I think you can do it on your arm but I've never tried that as my fingers are okay so far....I've been testing for over 7 years and only recently used any other finger except my left little finger. XXXXX
