I asked for advice about how to motivate myself to walk during the dark winter months and received fantastic advice and information. Luckily since I returned from Spain on Wednesday it hasn't been too cold and wet although of course it was very windy. So far, so good. I have managed an hour walk each day. Today I went along the canal and met all the dog walkers and joggers. The sun was shining and I even had to remove a jumper because I was too hot.

Salinda well done you sound very determined long may it continue, walks can be so amazing for the mind body and the soul x .

Have a good weekend

Good work Salinda, especially for getting in all this lovey weather we've been having. I always find it harder to get motivated at this time of year.

Good to hear that you've had good walking experiences along canals. Just occasionally, dogs (with bad owners - I'm not blaming the dogs themseleves) can be a danger to human walkers, so always worth being aware. With my current knee injury, I can hardly walk, and on Bank Holiday Monday, I went to a nearby park to help a friend improve her GPS skills. I was limping, pushing and leaning on my bike, and when off-lead dogs bounded up to me, I explained to owners that my knee hurts all the time, but especially when touched by anything / anyone, and balance isn't too good as I can't straighten one knee - they didn't seem to notice /care and made no attempt to call dogs off.

Salinda, well done with your walking, there are a lot of canals in Birmingham, but I have never been walking along them.

I think we are being quite lucky so far this winter weather wise.

Copepod, I know what you mean, about bad dog owners, when our dog was a puppy he was attacked by two dogs, without leads, he ended up having stitches in his ear and staying in the vets overnight, not to mention the ?100+ vet bill. We never let ours off the lead, we have one of those extender leads, so he gets to run about but we can rein him in when needed.

Some lovely canal walks around Birmingham, HappyChick.

I spent my teenage years in SE Birmingham, and parents, sister & her family all still live in the area, so have long experience of Grand Union and Stratford Canals in particular. Once over 18 years od age, a beer in a pub on the route became an additional attraction! Have used canals for running training with brother in law, too.

I've also got away at lunchtimes when working at Fiveways and eaten sandwiches while walking along towpaths - more enjoyable to get fresh air, but not enough time to sit & eat then walk, so had to do both at once.

These days, as a park ranger, I have to inform dog owners of zones where dogs must be on leads / under close control / can run free - ensuring a pleasant visit for all, whether adult humans / children / runners / cyclists / puppies / adult dogs etc is our aim. Not good if a puppy or child gets injured, often because they have less experience / are smaller / face nearer dog mouth height than adult humans / bigger dogs, so adult humans must take repsonsibility.

I think I am going to have to check out the routes, extending it to more than just walking the dog , to finding some other reason to be active.

My husband works at Five ways, some lunchtimes he does out for a walk along the canal, with his brother, they work in the same office, partly for the exercise but to get some fresh air too.
