Hi all, just to let you know I'm still around but not too good atm.

Daughter was the first to bring whatever it is into the house followed by hubby - they've both had "it" mainly on their chest.

Last Wednesday I started with "it" but mine is more of a bad headcold, runny nose, aching all over etc etc. The runny nose seems to have got better but I've got catarrh & feel awful with it ie headachey, generally feeling lousy & feeling sickly with it with an awful taste in my mouth. I'm eating just what I fancy atm but not really enjoying it. Does anyone know of any good catarrh pastilles I could get?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Sorry to hear you're not well Gill :( Do try and be careful what you are eating though, as your levels are probably already being raised by the illness. I use Olbas Oil to help relieve the stuffed up feeling. Halls do a cherry menthol sugar-free sweet also 🙂

Get well soon! 🙂

Yeah - I swear by Olbas Oil. They do a pastille too, but they have a sugar coating followed by being too hot for me to keep in my mouth.

Sometimes I put a few drops of Olbas in a Pyrex bowl, add nearly boiling water and do the old fashioned thing of hanging my face/nose over the steam with a towel on my head. Works brilliantly. At night I put a whole lot of Olbas Oil on a tissue and put it where I can just reach out and grab it for a good sniff.

As you say you have an awful taste in your mouth, headache etc, following a runny nose, I wonder if you actually have a sinus infection? One of the defining symptoms is "post nasal drip" - ie gunk falling down your throat from the back of the nose. If that's what you have, then you probably need antibiotics and nose drops such as xylometazoline (trade name Otrivine) to reduce inflammation and allow gunk to flow out - lie down to insert drops, if possible with head hanging off edge of bed, and stay lying down for a few minutes.
Anyway, worth asking a GP or pharmacist for diagnosis / advice.

Good advice from Copepod to make sure it's not a bacterial infection. But if it's just congestion, nothing is better than hot mustard, horseradish, etc. for clearing the airways!

Olbas Oil here too. I do the hot water/towel thing, or put a drop or two on a light bulb/ceramic ring. Or even a couple of drops on a tissue held under your nose, or on the pillow case.
