OK, so I put this off for 6 years since moving from an area where you just exchanged your sharps bin at the GP to an area where you have to arrange collection by the council. Most of my sharps are cartridge based and I have a needle clipper so I don't fill up bins fast! In view of getting a pump next week i thought I should get this sharps bin thing sorted. The collection was arranged for today, so I left my full sharps bin at the end of the drive last night.
This morning I found 2 new large sharps bins on the doorstep, but the old one still on the drive. Rang the council to ask if they could get the van to come back and collect it and was told they probably wouldn't collect it as it was not from this area. Explained that I was given the bin before I moved etc, so what I can I do? He said I should decant the sharps into the new bin, leave it out and they would come back in a day or two to collect it!
So I pointed out that you shouldn't be decanting sharps from one container to another, and once it is closed you can't open it again. I mean I know it's all my own sharps, but what if I was caring for someone with AIDS? It's the principle of the thing!
He was unable to come up with a sensible suggestion and was adamant they would not collect a sharps bit which was provided by another authority! Fortunately my old bin was little and the new ones are huge so I have stashed the old one inside the new and rearranged collection for next week- I told him I also wasn't happy with his suggestion of leaving a sharps bin out in the street for 2 or 3 days until they come back for the missed collection!
Grr. Made me grumpy all day! It's no wonder some people just chuck them in the normal bin!
