About 10 days ago I started getting an itch on my skin, and fairly quickly it became very sore, tender, and painful

It's around the small of my back, say from just above my waist to the top of my buttocks; and on the front it's from just above my waist to my abdomen

It really has become very painful, and even when I'm wearing soft clothing like a T shirt & jogging pants, as I move and the clothing moves over me it is very painful & tender, just like I've been scraped with a wire brush or something
As far as I can tell this is just on the surface of my skin, there doesn't seem to be any internal pain
It's not too bad in bed when I lie on my side

There is no rash, redness, or blisters
I also feel generally achy & tired

I had chicken pox when I was a boy, and I've Searched for shingles, and spoken with someone who's had it, but shingles doesn't quite seem to seem to fit

I have a doctor's appointment on Monday, but in the meantime I wonder if anyone else had any ideas?

It does sound like it is following an innervation pattern, probably around T11 or 12. The pain of shingles generally starts before the rash appears, though that is usually 5 days or so, and it’s usually one side only. That diagnosis goes with the achiness and tiredness.

Other than that, it may be nerve entrapment in the back, but that’s extremely unlikely.

Otherwise, NBC. See what the doc says.

PS it ain’t the diabetes.

Ooo if it was possibly shingles with me zuludog, I wouldn’t know how quickly to get there for antiviral treatment. The quicker it starts, the less chance of complications like Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) which is nasty.
See if you can get in ASAP.
To be honest, shingles doesn’t seem to fit with your description but I’d be putting the possibility to the surgery just in case because it’s not something to delay on. Best wishes.
