So a week since diagnosis, been GI eating ever since but am sooo hungry, wasnt the first few days but currently would love to stuff my face which of course pre Dx i would have :(
got a burgen loaf today, had a slice (its yummy).... loaf is sitting there saying 'eat me'.... i darent have any 85% choc as i reckon id eat the packet in one sitting....
i can reisist the cookies in the kids cupboard but just have a desperate desire to eat....
each evening ive had two oatcakes at bedtime just to try and stave off the hunger so i can sleep...
any advice?

Those cravings are so unfair! Part of it is habit, of course, you are used to satisfying your hunger with whatever favourite snack comes to hand, but now you need to be wise about your snacking! Protein snacks will abate your hunger more quickly and have the advantage of not containing much, if any, carbohydrate, so won't have an impact on your blood sugar levels. Most nuts are good to eat, in many ways, but can contain a lot of calories so you will need to keep portions small if you need to lose weight. Walnuts are especially good for you, or you can have cheese, or sliced meat - I love to nibble on a slice of ham whereas before it might have been a packet of jaffa cakes! 🙂

Try to be strong. Your sweet tooth will gradually disappear - possibly more quickly than you expect - and you will be able to just have those two squares of chocolate. Diabetes does demand a lot of discipline, but the sooner you adapt the changes, the sooner it will have less of a hold over you. Sugar free jelly is good for satisfying an urge with no impact, but be careful with anything labelled 'diabetic' as too much of that will not make your tummy happy!

Oh Lilies, I can relate to that!

I have been successful with sugar free jelly adding some frozen berries and topped with low fat-and-sugar natural yogurt and a few sunflower seeds. Its yummy and doesn't spike me.

I try to avoid starchy carbs if poss, especially cereals (except porridge and weetabix) and I can have problems with bread and rice. Trouble is, the more of these carbs I eat, the more hungry I get.

I have found that a cooked breakfast doesn't make me feel so hungry, whereas toast and marmalade doesn't fill me up at all and leaves me craving more ... and more ... and .... and .... and .....

Hi Lilies

Sorry to hear you feel so hungry, that's not a pleasant feeling!

Are you drinking lots of water? That will help to fill you up.

I'm hungry tonight too - the dinner I made, I didn't fancy so only ate a small bit. If you've got pains then you need to put something in your tummy - don't go for the choc as that isn't going to touch the hunger, that's just going to satisfy your mouth not your tummy! Do you have any other snacks available that will fill the hole without too much damage?

I've commandeered a friend's exercise bike so if I'm determined to have some grub I then go and have a mad cycle session (it's got a calorie counter on there).

I just keep saying to myself (in a bit of a 'deal or no deal' way!) - would I be more gutted not to eat that bag of crisps/cake/sandwich/choc, or would I be more gutted to gain weight/fail to lose any this week. I want to lose weight so badly that it always wins and being a stubborn bugger I look at the crisps like they are my enemy-preventing me from getting well!

Having said all that, please don't deprive yourself to the extent that you are in pain. You'll only rebel against yourself and potentially binge on something much worse than if you accept it, have a pint of water and some oat cakes. We're in this for the long haul - it's not about swapping the high BG symptoms for agonising hunger pangs!

Good luck, you're doing a grand job xx

Move away from the cake...!

Don't worry, this is bad timing, you will be back making those cakes before too long 🙂

I have urges for snacks in the evenings and have some nuts and a mug of hot water with marmite in it. That seems to satisfy .

I find a warm drink helps to stave off hunger. I also find things like nuts help aas I only need a few or raw carrot sticks.

Since I was diagnosed I find many sweet things too sweet and when I go into the bakers I see bags of sugar instead of cakes. One of my downfalls is chocolate, although I wont touch anyone elses. I ask hubby or my big boy to nip across the road and get me a small bar of chocolate, once thet is gone they wont get me any more and ask 20 questions if I look like I'm going to get it for myself.

Move away from the cake...!

This thread is making me hungry😱 Northener it's all your fault!! on a serious note I've been trying really hard to lose weight but have been feeling so hungry at times even though I have used up all of my WW points.....although I guess it is partly my fault because I use some of my points for wine......but then that helps me to cope with the hunger pains because I know that I can look forward to my evening treat which, in my case, is ice cold glasses of wine. Please look at the weight loss site on the forum for other suggestions.

The problem with wine is that you tend to forget how much nuts, chocolate you're consuming, well that's my excuse anyway.

Donna 😛

Now I can waer a halo with this because I don't eat anything with the wine apart from my evening meal:D

i so know that feeling!! i was the same last night!!:(

i did give in and have some cereals😡, in the past 5 weeks since dx this is the 2nd time i have had to give in,

i try yogurt and drinks but nothing worked!!, and it was making me feel sickly,

i do have 2 jaffa cakes at night at times, i'm on the slimming world diet.
i cant do the very high cocco content chocolate😱

bournville yes!! but not too much coco, i dont have things in now, then when i feel like that theres nothing to grab at, but i do think of the diabetes now more so than losing weight even though thats just as important,

it will get better with time xxx

As a veggie as well as D my dietician said ' eat nuts' so i did.

I now have to pay ?500 for a crown for my broken tooth !! Ah well.
I think I'll change my beloved hazelnuts to walnuts now 🙂

Good idea Ann, I get my walnuts from Aldi, reasonable price and they are very nice ones, I mix with broad beans as a little salad (with my chicken I'm afraid)

Mmmm love broad beans, I hadn't thought of putting nuts in my salad.... Bear of very little brain , sounds good 🙂

i cant eat nuts as allergic :(
just pigged out with lunch today, had to.... tescos finest chipolatas and bacon grilled with one slice of burgen and a satsuma.... yes i should have had salad or a load of veg but just could not face it!

Its good that you've got such a helpful chicken there to help you Vic :D

A hot drink like tea helps, also nuts and cheese are good. I use light cheese or light cheese triangles to get rid of hunger. A good cooked breakfast helps in the morning too. Eggs are supposed to be very good at filling you up for a long time, I eat them with 1 slice of burgen bread, some mushrooms and cooked tomatoes.
