Hi all,
Riley has his second meeting with the consultant today. Apparently he's still honeymooning even though we are giving insulin before food? This is apparently because of his carb ratios being so high (1:45 breakfast, 1:50 lunch and 1:60 tea). They suggested going back to just correcting but the reason we started carb counting again was because he was needing corrections two hourly.

How many people are usually in the consultants room when you go for check ups? Today there were 4 professionals in there with us (2 DSNs, the consultant and the dietician) I was a bit overwhelmed! They were all in there last time but I assumed it was just because it was the first time. They all kept firing questions at different times and i didn't feel comfortable asking questions. Our DSN is coming to see is in a couple of weeks so I will ask questions then. Just wondered if this was the norm x

Hi Stacey, it might be different when children are involved. I think the most I've ever seen together has been 2 - the consultant and the DSN. You shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable, I'm not impressed if they made you feel overwhelmed :( You and Riley are the most important people, and you are probably building up a much better awareness of Riley's needs by now than they are, so don't be afraid to take control, ask for full and clear explanations and make sure any decisions being made are ones you are happy with 🙂

Agree completely with Northerner. It sounds like white coat syndrome on testosterone injections. They should be there solely for the purpose of offering advice to help the wee big man and yourself to best manage his condition. If this means deviating from their text book solution then best they just learn to adapt to meet your needs and not the other way round.

I was quite proud of myself when they said it might be better to just go back to correcting high readings. As they were all nodding their heads and agreeing with one another I told them I disagreed as prior to returning to carb counting we were injecting more frequently. Just glad they agreed to let us continue with the carb counting! Xx

When I was in the paediatric clinic I saw a consultant, a DSN and a dietitian and there was often a training DSN in the room too. So lots of people in the clinic is a common thing.
Just remember they are all there to support you so try not to feel overwhelmed and make sure you get answers to your questions as soon as possible because that's what they are all there for.

Thank you 🙂 it's all still so new to us. I left there thinking maybe he's not diabetic (wishful thinking I know!) it's all just so confusing at times xx

Yeah, at least you found this forum! I know it was harder on my parents than it was on me when I was diagnosed (I was 13). I also remember my honeymoon period being very temperamental. Good luck with it all 🙂

We normally only see the consultant and one of the nurses together. Although when my daughter first got her pump she was a bit of a celebrity, the reason we got a pump so quickly was because of a trial which was comparing pumps with MDI in newly diagnosed children. And my daughter was the very first child to go on the trial at that hospital, and a requirement of the trial was that you had to join it within 10 days of diagnosis. So we were going into the hospital at least once a week to start with until we got the hang of things, and there were quite a few hangers on in the room a few times! Although mostly they didn't say anything and only the DSN and consultant did the talking. Thankfully once things settled down and we were only going in once every 2-3 months there were no hangers on any more!

Hi Stacey if you find there are to many people in the room ask them to leave, it's yours and Riley's Apt not theirs. They have to comply with your request, if you don't feel brave enough to say something then say it to the DSN who does your home visit and she will pass it on.

I asked 4 of the 5 students sitting in with a consultant I was seeing to go, blank looks from them and no movement, so just said who's Apt is it, yours or mine? Then headed for the door, they left before I reached the door. :D

If I ever try to mess with you then please remind me to not even go there 😛

Normally I would be this assertive but I was just taken back today. Next time I'm sure the assertiveness will come back haha x

Hi. My understanding is, if they are students or training, you should be asked its ok for them to be there and they should be introduced to you.
It doesn't sound like they were students etc though does it.

If it happens again I would ask what's it all about and remind them that Riley is there.
