Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Im have type1 and I seem to eat loads of sweets - my levels are not too bad but I think i eat too much sweets/biscuits. I seem to be putting on weight too. How do other people resist sweets? I just can't - it must be like smoking - im addicted!

When you are injecting insulin it can make you feel hungrier because you are putting the whole lot in for your meals rather than having a working pancreas that will be contantly adjusting the amount it releases as your food digests. Whilst you are able to inject to 'cover' the sweets you are eating, it's best to have them in moderation and preferably as part of a meal (or a hypo treatment of course!), otherwise they can result in your blood sugar levels spiking without realising. It's thought that all this spiking up or down can actually be worse than having higher, but steady levels.

How about trying some savoury alternatives, like nuts?

yeah my blood seems to go up and down alot. yeah i should try nuts or something like that as i cant seem to have just one chocolate! Then when my blood is high I feel worried and say no more sweets and im going to control my diabetes - but then the next time i eat them again. I need more willpower :(

If you stick at it you will probably find that you gradually lose the desire for sweet things - I've been amazed at how little I eat nowadays compared to before diagnosis! I like dry roasted peanuts because I find the flavour takes the edge off my appetite. Hope you get a big boost of willpower for the new year! 🙂

Twice now I have "given in" to my chocolate craving and twice I have had some Quality Street, only 3 the last time, but each time I have felt so poorly that now I really don't want them. Good luck with your cravings xx

thanks for posts guys. ive had 6 roses sweets after my supper already and the tin is sitting in front of me :( wish i could have some more but i know it wont be worth it when my blood goes high and having to take insulin to bring it down.

Lock them away! 😱 😉

lol i should lock them away. And my family who could eat loads only had one or two - they dont have a sweet tooth at all - i do! typical lol.

hey loloy 🙂

I am EXACTLY the same as you! my weakness is all sweets, chocolate...anything I'm not supposed to have!

I find the only way for me to do it is to cut it out completely....I know that sounds hard (it frightens me just typing it!) but I did it for 2 months once...and the way I motivated myself? I had a sheet of paper at home with every day, and for every day was a tick box. I had one box for chocolate and one for sweets! 2 months later I just wanted to keep ticking the boxes off and having that daily target that I actually had to physically record really did help me.

let me know if you fancy doing it and we can do it together! we can report in as well....having to tell someone you've eaten something can sometimes be enough to make you think twice!

GOOD LUCK!!

anything's worth a try hey?! can't do any harm. I say start from the new year! 🙂 i still have some xmas chocolate to eat lol

From the 1st, make sure you've got your chart ready, and we can message each other how we're doing too...and probably encourage each other too! I need to stop because I just get worse and worse and worse and before I know it I'm eating 4 or 5 chocolate bars every day! 😱

Hi loloy

Hope the chart works out for you. Not sure if you have much in the way of hypos, but I found using sweets (and sometimes chocolate) rather than lucozade to treat low level hypos helped me to say no for the rest of the time. It also can act as a nice reward for a bit of activity (DIY/gardening/long walk) if that's the sort of thing that makes your levels drop. The trick is to work out how much reward to give yourself without going high.

I appreciate it is a bit different for type 2s, but I try to keep fruit handy. I know there is naturally occuring sugar in fruit, but I find I want to eat less if I hav an apple or banana or something.

I'm with you there Caroline. I went to my dads for Xmas Eve and he had quite a few sticky puddings, I had a banana instead and to be honest I enjoyed it more.

thanks for the support - i didnt have any more sweets last night also 🙂 right i must get my chart ready 🙂

god im rubbish - just had 3 roses. dont know why i like sweet things so much :(

Don't give up - try again tomorrow! 🙂 It is possible to change your 'sweet tooth' - I used to have three spoonfuls of sugar in my tea when I was younger - now it would make me spit it out! 😉

yeah i gave up sugar in my tea when i was diagnosed with diabetes. i think the sweets i had today wont raise my sugars because since i had a few vodkas last night - i find the next day my blood sugars are usually lower after drinking. ok i shall try again tomorrow 🙂

ok guys - ive decided im determined tomorrow - NO SWEET THINGS. im not that weak that i cant go one day even without a sweet. il report back tomorrow night to let ye all know ive done it 🙂
