Hi I'm new to the forum and have just started on levemir injections for type 2 diabetes. I inject victoza also but have noticed very red skin and blotches even though I alter my injection sites, I keep the needle in for about 10 seconds after dispensing the dose and im on 4mm needles. Any advice should I get it checked out by gp or is this normal thanks F

Are you saying it's the insulin injection or victoza? Either way read the patient leaflet and see what it says.

Ps welcome to the forum 🙂

Thanks for replying. I've been on insulin since nov but my dose has been increased gradually but the last couple of weeks my stomach started getting red blotches and they have been getting itchy didn't have a problem on smaller doses or when using victoza on its own. Will have a look at the leaflets. f

st noticed you have addisons what a small world my husband has that

It could be an allergic reaction, best show it to the GP. There are alternative insulins if levemir isn't suitable. Not sure about victoza though. X

Oh wow, There are a couple of other members with Addison's as well 🙂

Just as an added thought have you had the needles you use changed to a different brand?

It does sound like an allergic reaction, but to what? Is the rash restricted to a particular site, i.e., where you've injected the Levemir, or is it more generalised? If it's restricted, it's probably the Levemir, if more general then it could be an interaction between the insulin and the Victoza, but the inssulin would still be the main culprit since you say it's only since you've on that.

There are alternatives to Victoza, mainly Byetta, just as there are different insulins you can try.

I had a form of Addison's for some years brought on by long term steroid use aimed at dealing with another condition I had. It went away eventually after I was taken off the steroids.

Levemir and Victoza are not recommended together (although my GP put me on them). Are you injecting in the same area? I used one side of my waist for Levemir and the other for Victoza. I used to get subcutaneous lumps from the injection sites and sometimes a stinging sensation, put seldom a rash. As suggested it could be a reaction to the carrier fluid in the injection, you should talk to your gp about it.
Keep an eye on your levemir injections, I found that they just kept going up and up ( I suspect the 2 drugs interact with insulin production /resistance).

I had this with one particular needle company. Has your doctor given you a different needle than before?
