I'm confused about if I should or should not really.

BS this morn on waking was 4.8 I had 2 wheetabix and skimmed milk. 2 hrs after 10.6. This was the same Thursday & Friday last week, but not Sat or Sunday after porridge. 10.6 is to high for 2 hrs after.

Am I to assume that wheetabix is spiking me and in fact I do need a little Novo with breakfast or is this normal 2 hrs after breakfast (i.e. acceptable) or should I look to alternative breakfast cereals.

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

...or forget Breakfast cereals altogether. For some reason, I cant remember, most t2s are highly susceptible to carbohydrate in the mornings. So better to go for protein breakfasts. This is Alan S's take on breakfast ( Alan S is a diabetic blogger who is an infrequent member of the support group ...

"For various reasons, I'm one of the many type 2's for whom breakfast is the hardest meal of the day to get right. The traditional "heart-healthy" breakfast of cereal, milk, juice and toast is a disaster for my blood glucose levels. So, after much experimentation I came up with these ideas.

Breakfasts With Minimal Carbs

1. Egg. The humble egg can be cooked in so many ways: poached, fried (minimal oil in a non-stick pan), normal omelette (beat it lightly while cooking), fluffy omelette (separate, whip the white with a spoonful of water, fold back with filling and yolk), scrambled with a little milk, frittata (sort of a heavier omelette with filling), and baked. Use fillings, cheese, fresh herbs if you can, dried if you can't.

2. Meat. Bacon, Ham, small steak, hamburger patty (watch the fat), chicken, prosciutto, hot dogs and so on. Can be fried, grilled/broiled, chopped after cooking and added to omelettes, frittata or scrambled eggs. For bacon or other fatty meats, drain on absorbent paper before serving.

3. Fish. Smoked, canned or fresh. Can be poached, fried, as a mornay (easy on the thickener), mixed in a stir-fry etc. Same for seafood.

4. Mushrooms. Small ones can be sliced and cooked with onions, herbs , garlic etc and a little oil and a smidgin of flour for a gravy. Large ones can be filled with bolognaise or napoli sauce (or whatever you like), topped with grated cheese and baked in the oven. Also another good omelette filling.

5. Casseroles and stews - beef, lamb, chicken, mince (ground beef) etc can be pre-prepared and divided into individual breakfast sized serves. Put them in small plastic containers in the freezer and zap one in the microwave for breakfast. Check the carbs in the recipe to check suitability. Beef bourgignon, Irish Stew (watch the spuds), chicken fricassee, whatever your favourite is. Always test at 1 hr the first time with casseroles - thickeners are usually the carb culprits for high BGs.

6. Leftovers - slices of roast meat, re-heated or cold, re-heated chops etc

Bon Appetit."

Thanks mcdonagh unfortunately I don't have time to cook breakfast in the mornings, and would prefare not to add anymore saturated fats to my diet. So maybe I need to try different cereals. I try and have a good balanced diet and need my morning fibre.

I just don't seem to get it ?

be interested to hear how other T 2 cope. I think I'm doing ok and them grrrrr

I've heard Shredded Wheat isn't so bad Di, you might want to try it. Personally I don't like it but my mum used to love it! Or what about Lizi's Granola? That's been recommended quite a few times by members here 🙂

I do like Liz's granola, expensive though for what it is. I also like shreaded wheat but have to have warm milk as it is dry and gaggy lol.

Some more trying and testing is in order I think x

You're not kidding! I was on my monthly shop for Burgen bread in Waitrose today and spotted some. I thought ooh, might try some, then clocked the price - ?4.50! What's it made of, gold and diamonds? 😱 🙂

Yeah I no, I tried some a while ago. Very nice but I though it was a bit to high in fats. Would be ok now and again. Lol. Make it a treat breakfast lol no in fact forget that if I was gonna have a treat breakfast it would be .......

Sausage, Bacon, black pudding, egg and beans with 2 pieces of brown toast mmm mmm mmm

Hi, weetabix is a big no no for my little girl too, sends her into the teens and is high GI on the index. However she can tolerate things like cheerios which have in more sugar without the spike so work that one out? You'll have to do some experimenting. Haven't tried her with anything like granola as she would still be chewing on it 2 hrs on :D

If you are definitely going to plough on with cereal despite your meter, you might consider making your own Muesli mix ?

Alan S (again) has a recipe which he makes up in advance ...

I've recently discovered that whole grain cheerios with semi skimmed milk don't spike me....and quite healthy (I think!) 🙂

No breakfast cereal is healthy, it's all over-manufactured c**p! May as well face it and stop kidding yourselves.

I don't know how people can ever eat two Weetabix. or Shredded Wheat. One is plenty. But I have to microwave my bowl of milk for my Weetabix cos I only like it warm!

And I only eat anything of a morning really to stop my DP ......

I don't really agree with your description of cereals  some are unhealthy and some are healthy (high fibre and low in sugar and salt). Just have to choose carefully and look at the labels........Milk is the strange food substance that we humans decide to have.....we are the only adult animal that does have milk in our diet and is probably very unnatural!

Ever heard of cats Phil ?😉

I agree with what you are saying about cereals, I only have one weetabix and I had a small yougurt as well this morning, and then had a BS of 2.3 at 10.30am, so glad I checked before I went out, ( but this doesn't normally happen very often)

Cats/Dogs don't choose the milk, as we do, we give it to them. I buy evaporated milk for Harley, cat and Pebbles, Tias cat only likes fresh water, in a glass or out of the tap🙄 So I'm sure Phil has heard of cats, as quoted by Mcdonagh, it just that WE choose to give milk to them, they are perfectly happy with water( and probably healthier too lol)

I do love semi skimmed milk on my cereal 🙂 Sheena

The defining charactersitic of mammals, marsupials and monotremes is that they all drink milk as young. Most humans of African or European origin can drink milk as adults, too, although many human adults of Asian origin can't tolerate milk.

Many mammals do drink milk if they get the chance eg badgers and hedgehogs drink milk that drips from cows' udders onto grass. Not that it's good for hedgehogs to have milk, so we shouldn't put out saucers of milk for them.

And, not all cereals are equal - some contain very high sugar and highly refined grain, while others are less refined, no added sugar, some literally wheat only. For me, cereal (usually a crunchy muesli type mix) with yogurt (plain, probiotic, supermarket budget brand) is the perfect start to the day, and I know how much insulin is needed depending on waking level and what I'm doing through the morning.

Then, I put water in the bowl to stop the muesli sticking before washing up usually in the evening when solar power has provided us with hot water - and our cat likes drinking the dilute liquid!

Copepod- you are welcome at my house anytime for breakfast! My absolute pet hate is those who put a bowl in the sink after porridge or muesli and don't add water to soak - then its chisel time! Not a lot to ask really:D

A good thread Di - I will be interested to see all your postings.🙂

Has anyone tried the new allbran crunch? I have tried this as a change to all bran itself and have to say it was more enjoyable - but I didn't test - and its probably not low gi either!🙄

Hi Lucy

Trouble is, when we take our cat to stay with my or partner's parents, she drinks out of their bowls, too, which isn't really guest-like behaviour!

Agree, it's a good thread - posters offering practical solution to a problem you probably wouldn't ask a health professional, even if you could get an appointment!

I'll keep everyone updated on the progress

I can tell you now from the testing I did back in September with cereals after 2 hrs

Porridge 5.9 to 7.1
Wheatabix 8 to 10
Shreaded Wheat 8 to 10
Branflakes 10 - 12
Cornflakes 11.1
Rice Crispies 10.6

My Gp originally said upto 10 is ok and try insulin with it - tried and kept dropping into hypo before lunch. (personally up 8+ is to high for me and I didn't agree)

I have since discussed with my consultant who has told me to adopt the less carbs in the morn and more protein - before opting for insulin.

So I am in the process of trying different breakfasts - see my other thread

ps my in laws cat likes to sneak milk out of the cereal bowls in the morn, but it plays havoc with her tummy - poor kitty x
