they requested I should provide a sample for C-Peptide test, I’ve never done this test before

advised me to eat a few more carbs with a meal when I’m going to do the test
to ensure my BS rises above 10 (2 hrs after eating)
provide the sample (they’ve given me the red top bottle) so they can see whatever it is they’re looking

looking to reduce or change my medication
hopefully coming off the insulin (not that I taking a lot now compared to before)

Question is: I guess when I eat pre this test, I still take my insulin and Metformin as I would usually,
with this test ? just not 100% sure
(the video call disconnected when my battery died and the phone overheated) before I asked everything

Im sure someone on here knows about thsee tests
THANX

What type of sample are you providing? It sounds like you are collecting the sample at home so I am guessing urine??When I had my C-peptide there were no instructions regarding food (I was following a low carb way of eating at the time) or time of day. I just went to the hospital and they took a blood sample and sent it off. I had GAD antibody blood sample done at the same time and I know one of them had to be refrigerated or frozen immediately after the sample was taken and sent off on ice to the lab. That may have been the GAD test though.

@goodybags Phone them to make sure. My C Peptide test was a blood test. My blood sugar was in range and ‘too low’ for the test so I ate something without insulin to make it higher. But that was a blood test and I’m Type 1 so I really would double-check what you should do.

I should check what is required as normally the C-peptide test is done on a fasting blood sample and sometimes also a 24 hour urine sample. So you need to check about eating, meds and what sample you are being asked to give.

Thanks 4 the advice @rebrascora @Inka & @Leadinglights
DSN phoned me back today, so all is clear now
this test is a urine sample, require me to still take medication but spike
BS to above 10 (2 hrs after eating my meal)
either through reduced insulin or eating something different.

so I’m going to have a treat with my evening meal.
I’ve still got hot cross buns in the freezer, so now a medical excuse to eat one.
planning to do this C-Peptide test on Monday, Hba1c due on 12/05
looking forward to both results

It's a bank holiday on Monday so might be worth considering Tuesday instead 🙂

Hope the results provide helpful details to help shape your treatment going forwards @goodybags

cPeptide is usually measured to see how much insulin a person is producing themselves. The insulin that you produce comes with cPeptide at the same time, but they missed out the cPep on the insulins we inject, so by measuring cPeptide concentrations you can tell how much insulin a person’s pancreas is able to produce.

That makes sense then thanks for explaining that @everydayupsanddowns
this forum has been a fantastic resource of information to help me over the last 12 months

I had one done two weeks ago they`re trying to reduce my insulin intake, not going to happen.

As @rebrascora says blood or wee makes a difference, still waiting on blood results from Exeter,
ahh the old battery ploy knackered and hot sounds like me. Eat as normal and take you medication
just make sure your bloods are above seven for the test preferably in the eights or nines but don`t
worry if they go into the low teens, good luck let us know how you are doing, we are here for you.

frustrated as still waiting for the results of both the C-Pep and my latest Hba1c
C-Pep test was done at the start of the month
and bloods for Hba1c were taken just over a week ago

phoned up my surgery today and the receptionist did let me know the Dr and the DSN
are due to have a discussion (between themselves tomorrow)
so will see what they decide between themselves, I am hopeful for some feedback soon.

Ive a feeling the Hba1c isn’t going to be quite as low as it was 3 months ago as I’ve reintroduced bread in my diet and have cheated and had a few take aways - will see what the results are when they eventually come.

Good news today lengthy chat with DSN
the C-Pep test confirmed I’m producing plenty of insulin myself
next stage is we have a plan to try and wean my body off any injected insulin
Hba1c came back (pretty much the same as 3 months ago) 3 months ago 48 last week 52

my healthcare team still aren’t 100% sure if we should increase my Ozempic, because I already am being treated for diabetic retinopathy ( last 3 years ongoing injections in my eyes)

interestingly the DSN felt if we can manage me without any injected insulin (currently on novamix30)
my weight loss could rapidly increase,
which sounds good as by my BMI is still 30.6 (so according to NHS officially I’m still Obese)
