I, like many of us, enjoy a glass of red wine or two with my dinner. I drink it because I enjoy it but also because of the well documented effect it can have on Blood Glucose. Last night, I had no wine, a lamb shoulder steak, some fried mushrooms and fried tomato and four smallish boiled baby potatoes. Before eating, I had a reading of 6.2 and two hours later I read 9.3. I blame the potatoes as the rest of the meal was food that I normally tolerate well. Tonight I had an identical meal but enjoyed a couple of small glasses of red wine. Before food I read 6.5 and after, only 7.1. The quandary............. do I cut out my beloved potatoes and wine and hopefully keep my BG rise tolerable, or continue to enjoy potatoes and red wine and maintain a similar acceptable effect?

Personally I'd cut out the spuds and have an extra glass of wine to cheer you up!

I like the cut of your jib. :~}

A glass of red wine a day won't do you any harm. It's common in a lot of countries where people live to a great age. I would recommend taking a couple of days off drinking a week. As I am going 'high carb, no boundaries' on Christmas day, I will be drinking most of the time. I hope the drink will balance things out. Actually, a few months back, I was up at the mum in laws, & we went out for a drink sometime in the afternoon. Ended up drink into the night & I was 'well wasted' shall we say. Well, the next day, I could eat anything I wanted & never went above 5.5mmol. I don't recommend this way of glucose control, but was an interesting experiment. Had one hell of a hangover too,😳

I take on board what you are saying, Mark. I don’t want to start considering wine as medicine and moderation is the key. Like you, however, I’ll be off limits over the festive season and aim to enjoy myself with the family. Have a good one!

As a T1, if I overindulge on the vino I'm plagued by hypos the next day 😱
