Hi

As some may know my partner and I have been trying for a baby for well over a year. Then in October I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid. The doctors thought this was causing me not to ovulate. It is now under control.

Yesterday I was at a fertility clinic as we have now been referred; I have been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries. I know this is common in woman with type 2 diabetes but apparently not type 1.

Anyone else got this and type 1?
Anyone managed to have a baby with it?
So stressed by it all, diabetes, thyroid and now this. What next? A baby would be nice!!!!!!

Hi Smit, sorry to hear about the latest diagnosis :( Can't help you personally, but hopefully someone with experience will be along soon.

Thanks Northerner, just keep thinking what is next. I know I shouldn't have but googled it. It has links to type 2 but not type 1. But i am sure it must be linked.

Hi Smit this is an excellent site for those with PCOS called Soulcysters very informative site for people with PCOS.

Hi Smit - I have T1 (30+ yrs), underactive thyroid and polycistic ovaries... and I have 2 kids, so don't give up hope! Fingers crossed things happen for you soon...try not to stress (easy for me to say I know 🙄). Guess you're probably doing this but I took a pregnancy supplement (pregnacare) & 5mg folic acid from 3 months before trying to conceive each time. Are they doing more tests etc, or what have the docs said?

Take care,

Twitchy xx

Thank you for the website squidge63, I will check it out.

Twitchy, you give me a ray of hope, thank you. I have had a scan to look at ovaries. I am going for a test to check tubes are not blocked, doctor doesnt think they are but just checking incase. Than hopefully we will start clomid in a few months to get me ovulating. I haven't really had a period since coming off the pill over a year ago!

Do you mind me asking, did you require help falling pregnant? Don't feel you need to answer that.

Also, I don't have any other signs of PCOS apart from no period, i have no excess hair and i am a healthy 9 stone. Guess that doen't mean anything.

Ps, been on folic acid for a year and a half lol didn't think we would have all these problems. Still going to keep taking it, just incase. x

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 15 years ago when it was hardly known about. I've never received any treatment because I've never wanted children so fertility hasn't been an issue. So with that as your focus there is a good chance of getting appropriate treatment.
With hindsight there are a lot of symptoms and risks including diabetes which are related and I'm now displaying more symptoms. Perhaps I should have pushed for treatment years ago but the symptoms I displayed were not seen as a problem to the GPs I've had.

There is a email list you can subscribe to which gives you info on a regular basis http://www.pcossuccess.com I think they have a book which it is promotion for but you can subscribe to the list for free.

hi Smit.... so sorry you have been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries. I have type2 diabetes and I have polycystic ovaries and although I found it difficult to get pregnant I do have a lovely daughter who is now 33 years old :D my daughter also has polycystic ovaries but she has a lovely son aged 13.......... so don't give up hope as I believe that nowadays there is treatment available. other, younger, members of this forum will point you in the right direction. but I just wanted to say that even without any treatment my daughter and I both have managed to get pregnant 🙂

Hi Smit, to be honest the only easy part of pregnancy for us was conceiving - I only know I've got polycistic ovaries because midway through the first C section the obstetrician rather absentmindedly said "did you realise you've got polycystic ovaries?" (my reply was something along the lines of 'er, never having had the view of them that you've got now...no?!') I'm not particularly hairy (but do feel the need to remove hair far more often than is convenient - not sure if that's not just a reflection on my laziness though!)... no excess facial hair etc, weight is not a massive problem, I've always put my excess weight down to poor diet / lack of exercise (still trying to work on those! 🙄).

The clomid sounds really positive! 🙂 Also it's funny how the body works - my s-i-l & her hubby tried to conceive for years, gave up & adopted...then a few years later, bingo! Conceived... so the body's a bit of a law unto it's own I suspect! I know this sounds a bit mad, but have you tried tilting your pelvis up & sticking a pillow under your bottom after ttc & just staying put for a while? (ie using gravity - sorry if that's too much detail!!) 😱

Anyway, best of luck! xx

i had clomid in 99 and i end up in ITU AND I WAS NEARLY DEAD !!!they did not know if i would make it after the emergency surgery so carefull every treatment has the downside and the doctor they dont tell you every thing all the time i dont want to scare anybody but every body is different and all medicine dont work like they say on the box all the time this is why i could not go for IVF is not so simple like it sounds so be carefull and good luck

Thank you all so much for the replies, you have given me hope. I am hoping the clomid drug will help us to have a baby in time. Fingers crossed. I will check out the suggested websites. Glad to see i'm not the only one with it, just feel as if i get everything :( just having a little self pitty moment. I think thats allowed after having type 1 for 26 years lol. x

Huge thanks again. x
