I'm just curious to know how many of you have a parent/sibling/child with T1 as well as yourselves. My son's T1 came completely out of the blue as there is no history on either sides of our family, but I have read the statistics that suggest his sister has a 1 in 6 chance of developing it too (she is 5 years older). I just wonder if it really is that common in siblings, and how likely would my son be to pass it on to any children he should have in the future? Thanks.

I was 49 when diagnosed T1 and my sister, who is 2 years older than me shows no signs of it (fingers crossed!). No history in my family that we know of, but my dad has psoriasis which is also autoimmune in origin so there may be some genetic connection there. We've got a few parents here who have more than one child with T1, but by the same token we have a large number of members who are the only ones in their familes. I think there are so many things involved in the cause that it can't be predicted by genetics alone.

my younger brother has type 1 as well, he was diagnosed at 2, myself at 15....

no type 1 in the family, and my dad is a geneoligist, so quite confident.....

My brother (older by 3 years) is also Type 1 - he was diagnosed at the age of 10, I was diagnosed at 23. No other history of Type 1 in our family, my parents were tested as originally thought I may have MODY but no link discovered.

No history of T1 in my family anywhere. My sister is a few years younger, she's 20 now but hasn't developed it thankfully!

I have two T1 sons, dxd '09 and '10, one of them has recently been dxd coeliac and the other is about to be tested. There is no other T1 in the family that I can find. It's a mystery to me, and is a worry for their two sisters (one of whom faints if needing injections).

I have a twin sister, another 4 sisters and 3 brothers (I'm no.8 out of the 9) I've been T1 for almost 22 years I was the first know diabetic in my family and after all this time and now being made a great-great aunty earlier this year I'm still the only one..

None of my 3 children have diabetes highest will be 25 near the end of the year🙄

When my husband when he was dx'd 32 years ago he was the first know in his family but since then his uncle had been dx'd with T2 and his cousing as T1 several years ago.. His son from his first marriage who's same age as my oldest doesn't have diabetes..

Going back to my family my twin sister got a higher chance of being diabetic than the rest of my family including my children's...

And none of the females in my family are impressed to find out when the first pregnant that they get a GGT test😱

I have a second cousin or something like that that has type 1 (never met him).

There are trials you can take part in, such as DGap, that try to give you some statistical chance of your child's siblings developing t1.

Very interesting that, my cousins daughter on my mum's side has psoriasis, I didn't realise that was autoimmune, but my brother had a pretty rare autoimmune disease a few years ago - Guillian Barre Syndrome. I often wonder if that shows my side of the family have some genetic issues. I am just so intrigued by it all. Why my son, not my daughter. Will she, won't she? Who knows. I even wonder if us as parents could yet develop it. It's so mind boggling.

It's good to hear your children are in the clear, I have wondered whether my son will have children who go on to develop it or not. At the end of the day, I know there is nothing we can do to prevent it, and though I appreciate life will never be the same for him again, he seems to pretty much take it in his stride and goes off with his mates for an evening just like he used to. He is just getting on with it, so life really does go on.

We were invited to take part in DGap and the BOX study at the start, but my son was all diabetesed out, and didn't want anything to do with any of the trials. I did explain some of them are only paperwork, family history, which we would deal with, but he was vehemently anti it all, so I haven't pressed it. Shame, as I believe anything that would help unravel this great mystery would be beneficial to everyone.

I was diagnosed at 13. My brother (+2 years) has no signs of it up to 48yo.

Neither of my parents have any autoimmune problems. My dad's mum MAY have had T2 but her health was kept secretive due to dementia.

My daughter is 22 and has no signs of diabetes.

So I seem to be the genetic weak link 🙄:D

Hi, I was diagnosed t1 at 11 months old, my younger sister was diagnosed t1 in her mid teens - as far as I know we're the only ones in either side of the family. We both also have underactive thyroids, which is apparently another autoimmune condition. I have two kids (4 & 1) and am fervently keeping my fingers crossed (& praying!!) that they don't get it.

Just saw this! There is a link between diabetes and psoriasis?? i did not know this, my dad has it and i have too inherited it from him...could this have contributed somehow? I was diagnosed at 21 with no family history of diabetes.

Carly is the 1st in the family but I'm a coeliac so its may be linked, maybe not.... who know!

Carol is the only one in our family to have diabetes. Neither her dad nor I have any relatives (that we know of) who have/had diabetes. Naturally, we do worry about her sister maybe becoming diabetic too.

Fiona actually got very worried shortly after her 10th Birthday, as that was the time Carol was diagnosed (3 months after her 10th Birthday) and she thought she would get it then too.
