Painful Injection?...

Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
So I did my injection this morning, and although I normally feel a bit of a prick when the needle goes in (or feel nothing at all), today it REALLY hurt. It actually made me cry without even realising it, it hurt that much. I injected on the left side of my stomach, and alternate sides of injections, so it's not sore or anything. I did have a stomach ache this morning before taking it, so do you think this had something to do with it?...

I'm just a bit worried that something's gone wrong. I tried phoning my nurse this morning but she was in the clinic so couldn't answer my call right away, but she did say she'd call me back. I know you guys aren't doctors or anything but do you have any idea why this could be? Have you had something similar? I hope I haven't done something wrong...

You will find you hit nerve endings sometimes, just pull out and try again..........

Were else are you injecting? Being as slim as you are, a different area like your thighs or bum may be better.......:D

Hi Kerry, I wouldn't worry, this can happen from time to time and especially when you are fairly new to everything. Sometimes you are just unlucky enough to go close to a nerve or sometimes it is because you tense up as you are about to inject. Very occasionally the needle can also pass through a tiny capilliary blood vessel so that a little blood is produced - but this is nothing to worry about either. I've had a (very) few occasions where it has hurt when the needle has gone in but there have been no problems. I think as you get more used to it, it seems it is less likely to hurt - perhaps because you become more relaxed as time goes on. Your stomach ache won't have had anything to do with it, except again there is the possibility that this made you tense up a bit when injecting.

I hope your DSN calls you back and is able to reassure you 🙂

Phew that's a relief haha. I thought I may have stabbed something really important 😛

I was definitely tense so that probably had something to do with it...

I'm going to start injecting on my thighs on Friday when I get my amount of injections increased because I don't want to start getting sore... I was told to avoid anywhere but my stomach until I get the hang of it so that I don't struggle with the angles and stuff. Bit scared it's going to hurt more on my thighs though since it seems more sensitive O.O

Thank you very much for clearing it up 🙂

Another possibility is how long are your needles? If they are too long you can have a few probs (hitting muscle etc) but hopefully you've got nice little uns - 5mm-ish.

Did your insulin absorb OK? were your after brekkie test(s) what you expected?

Finally you aren't perchance somewhere near your period are you? - some ladies are more sensitive to pain generally around that time - remember my leg waxing woman telling me that once, when I said she was being more vicious than usual that day!

I hope you are feeling better. Is it possible the needdle was blunt? I know lancets get blunt if used too often.

My test after breakfast was pretty okay, considering before breakfast it was an astounding 18.8 -_-

My needles are only 4mm. They used the young children's needles because I'm so scared of them haha. I do change my needle every day and only do two injections a day, so I don't thhink it was blunt, but I did change the needle just in case.

And I've just come off of my period, so that may be why I was all crampy and such.

Thank you very much. Really struggling with it right now. I don't even know how I'm going to manage four injections a day, even though I know it'll give me more control. Guess it's just something I have to get used to though. Sigh.

Hi Kerry
I'm surprised you were told not to inject anywhere else except the tummy.
My daughter Carol always injected in her thighs, never in her tummy. When on 2 we had a saying - left in the morning, right at night. Lovely rhyme. When she started on MDI that of course didn't work anymore. But as long as you rotate the sites there's no reason you can't inject in the thighs.

Good luck with the change over on Friday x

You will get used to it Kerry - in fact you'll probably get so used to it that there will be occasions when you can't remember whether you have done it or not! (Happens to all of us one time or another! 😱) 🙂

I can't even imagine that right now haha. I feel like I spend my whole day dreading the next one xD

Before too long you'll just do it automatically 🙂
Don't worry about injecting into your thigh when you get to it, I always found injecting in my thigh to be less uncomfortable than my stomach.

Good luck with everything 🙂

AHA! said the detective! - were you sweaty? I know I used to get dead clammy for the first however long and it can hurt like STINK if you jab into wet skin - likewise after you've had a shower if you don't dry yerself properly.

I prescribe your hairdrier on 'cool' aimed at the site to ensure it's dry and then stick it in before it has a chance to get clammy again .....
