Can anyone recommend an online dietician? If there is such a thing.
After nearly a year prediabetic, still have not been able to work out what I need to eat to maintain my weight. Am unhappy with the " just eat more fat" idea, too much evidence that excess saturated fat causes other health problems.
Am 5 ft 6 in tall (164cm), and now weigh 7st 5lb
(46.9kg) My weight is still falling but more slowly now.

Well if the extra fat comes from oily fish or seeds (eg flax or sesame or nuts or olives) then it isn't saturated - so are you already eating more than enough of those?

eg I adore walnuts and when I saw some, invested (it wasn't cheap) in a bottle of walnut oil which I used on any raw veg and also on new potatoes - however as my first husband loathed the flavour of it and there was no pressing health reason for me to have it I didn't subsequently buy any more and went back to EVOO instead.

And don't forget nuts!

Todays breakfast was a large handful of brazil nuts. Am planning to make a nut based museli again.
Ingredients

200g Mixed Nuts – chopped
100g Mixed Seeds ( used mix of pumpkin, sunflour, sesame and golden flax last time)
50g unsweetened desiccated coconut
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp Xylitol or Erythritol (used splenda)
1 to 2 tsp of vanilla essence ( missed this out)
50g butter (melted)

Method

1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large baking tray. Bake for 10 to 15 mins in the oven at 180oC but keep on checking and stirring as it can burn quite quickly. Cook until slightly brown.
2. Leave to cool in the tray and then transfer to an airtight container.
3. It will keep very well for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
4. Sprinkle onto full fat Greek yoghurt and possibly add some berries.

Nutritional Information

Makes 10 servings, per serving –
257 kcal
2.2g carbs
23.6g fat
7.2g saturates
3.5g fibre
<0.1g salt

Still not sure if coconut oil or butter is better healthwise. Do know which tastes best though.
Am also trying hard to love avocado. Mashed on toast for breakfast its great, but what to have instead of toast? Need some other ideas to use them.
Here in France the cream seems to have a lower fat content, UK double cream is, if memory serves above 50% fat.
The carton of creme entier in my fridge is 30%.
Also have no freezer, power is unreliable at present, cannot leave it on overnight, so difficult to batch cook, making food costs very high.

Please be very careful about taking advice from anyone on-line claiming to be an expert on medical matters. My advice would be to ask your GP about speaking to a dietician. These people are qualified, you never know what qualifications Dr Google has

That sounds very similar to my ‘kettle porridge’ that I have during the week but I add quinoa flakes so get up to the dizzy heights of 11 g CHO. It is a very tasty start to the day and I add loads of nuts to the mix.

Back to your question of online dietitian, the links that @Bronco Billy have given include a lot of information. If you are struggling to maintain your weight, it would be good to get some professional advice.

My sister is in exactly the same situation as you Liz. She's pre-diabetic but skinny as a rake and under 7st. No matter what she tries she can't gain weight, although it's also true that it doesn't matter what she eats, her blood sugar levels don't seem to suffer as her HbA1c has stayed the same for 2 years now. She is now maintaining her weight, rather than losing it but still underweight. Do you manage much exercise? It might be possible to gain weight through building muscle and can also help offset any carbs you eat, so perhaps following a strength and fitness plan could help as much as a dietician?

Not any exercise as such, but we have just started a building project. I don't sit down except to eat atm. Am doing a bit of digging, but hampered by a longstanding shoulder problem, making a veg patch out of a field, as well as all the usual jobs. 14618 steps today.

That's about the same number of steps I'm doing per day now; upped it a lot in recent months. I started losing weight again & was a bit surprised when I worked out how many extra cals I was burning from it.

FWIW, this tool helped me get a handle on things:

Did try going to the GP about weight loss. For some reason he bypassed the dietitian idea and went straight for the heavy guns. Blood tests, X-Ray and CAT scan. Frightened both myself and Mr Skinny into delaying our move to France. Once all tests were complete and results normal, he seemed to lose interest. Was unwilling to refer to dietitan. Thank you for the links, will be looking for tips there.

The nut museli is a bit expensive on its own, so mix it 30g and 20g Asda low sugar granola, served with cream comes in at about 11gCarbs. French cream is lower fat content. Or maybe I am buying the wrong thing again- ended up with cottage cheese on my granola this morning, when I was expecting yoghurt.

@SkinnyLiz - Here are a few resources for your to explore. Although Trudi Deakin's (Xpert Health) website focuses on weight loss and maintenance, she is a registered dietician. I have no idea if she practises as such, but ther are email addresses where you could enquire.

Lots and lots of nutritionists and the like do both face to face and consultations by Skype.

There's a lot out there, but recommending such a person is a bit like recommending a hairdresser, in that at least a margin of how it will work depends on you and they gell. Of course, it is important to enure whoever you choose is qualified, but most, if not all, professional registers are online these days.

I was referred to an N H S dietician first one was quite helpful but she went to work in a hospital ,the next one said I didn't need a dietician (I am a skinny type 2) I don't think she knew anything about people who were not fat !!

Thanks will be investigating the links

I would advise taking a bit of care with any organisation providing diet advice as some of them still advise having carbs and low fat rather than keeping the carbs down. This advice would normally be counter productive as carbs will be converted to glucose and these may cause weight gain and higher blood sugar. My own advice would be to keep the carbs down and have enough fats and proteins to keep you feeling full. You can choose to have unsaturated fats but note that most of the cholesterol in the blood comes from the liver and not from what you eat so some would say you can eat any fat sensibly freely.

thanks to everyone who replied. Am aware of the need to cut carbs, but as a naturally slim person am finding this causes weight to fall to off far too fast, in spite of my effort to eat more, and esp to eat more fat.

Did try asking to see a dietitian, because of the continued weightloss. Dr decided to investigate for cancer. Tests, massive stress, big delay to all plans for MrS retirement. All results normal. Still not seen a dietitian.

Have lost 2 stone, and now weigh 7st 4 lb. 5ft 6 in tall. BMI well into underweight. however as we have now moved and dont actually have a doctor, need to try online help.
