Nuts

I genuinely thought nuts were carb free. I test my bloods 2 hours after every meal. I'm newly diagnosed but have managed to get nearly all my readings 2 hours after down to between 5-6.

Was feeling hungry today after lunch so had a some nuts. Didn't think anything of it and tested 2 hours past lunch and my bloods were 10.4! I checked the packet and yup carbs!

Does anyone know what nuts are the lowest in carbs. They are a great snack for me

I don't count carbs for nuts when considering a quick-acting insulin dose as they generally take a while to digest, and don't afftect my BG that much, and are a good snack for me - but we are all different - I found this article which says which ones are better than others - hope it helps:

Brazils and walnuts are a smidge over 3 % carbs.

Thanks. I dont use insulin. I'm type 2 and just trying to figure out what good for me to have. Do you think bg of 10.4 is high after having a handful of nuts?

10.4 is not too bad 2hrs after food although I am T1 so it is different (I'm not too alarmed if it does up to 12 or 13 or even slightly higher, as I'm confident it will come back down sufficiently if I've worked out my insulin dose correctly before my next meal) - how many carbs were in your actual lunch, before the nuts? That will obviously have an effect too

I had soup and 2 pieces of bread and a packet of crisps. Definitely higher in carbs than I have been having but was expecting a 5 or 6 number and then the 10 hit me lol. Didn't think the nuts would do anything but there we go.

I've been experimenting with carbs and how they are effecting me. Had spag bol the other night and had a full portion of pasta and bloods were good

It'll be the bread rather than the nuts I reckon - I know you don't take insulin but just to put it into context, I take double the amount of insulin for bread (white sliced in particular, which I love!) than for the pasta in your spag bol - rough estimate on carbs for your lunch are 35-40g carbs for the bread (depending on type & thickness), plus 15-18g for the crisps with the nuts on top and if it was a standard tin of soup there would be some carbs in there too

Your reading is not unexpectedly high if you had soup thickened with starch, with bread and potato crisps and then nuts - plus carbs are likely to make you feel hungry sooner after a meal.

Much more likely to e the bread and crisps than the nuts per se. I bought a packet of salt and pepper Almonds and cashews from Aldi which are 11.9g carbs per 100g, it suggests a portion of 25g so 3g carbs.

What was it before you ate the nuts?
Nuts barely affect my BG.

It was still the bread and the crisps doing their evil work IMO

I have continued eating bread if i eat out as there are so few options however I always refuse crisps. I know recently I ate in an Iraqi restaurant and had delicious lentil soup with a homemade roll. I remember the reading being quite high. I just had a light supper to compensate. I like macademia, walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts but until you are more certain about your diet add some to breakfast or as a snack mid morning or evening. If I'm not carefully I can mindlessly snack that's where you can eat too many carbs. I'm not testing much at the moment but I remember discovering you should test 2 hours after the start of a meal presumably even if you have just finished

I have read that Almonds, Pecans and Walnuts are the best nuts for diabetics, but obviously not everyone is the same, and some people react differently to different foods, eg: spiking BG, etc.
Its also about the portion, so a few say 6-8 nuts may be healthier, rather than a huge handful (maybe 20+)
Also noted that you ate other carbs too, so may have been those rather than the nuts?

I find the carbs and cals book great as its lists most foods and also shows a photo of the actual portion size, so its easy to see how much you should be eating, which works for me.
