Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
In the summer I do a lot of exercise with still playing cricket and helping on the family farm. However after this weekend I have started to experience some numbness on my left thumb at the top. I am wondering if this could be something to do with carpal tunnel as I sometimes experience some dis-comfort in my left wrist - and I know a friend who has had both wrists done recently for carpal tunnel. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on this and whether diabetes or in fact has any affect on the hands. Eugh

Hi Eugh

It doesn’t sound like anything to do with diabetes, so you can cease worrying about that. It’s always a temptation to blame diabetes for everything, even sometimes among doctors.

Numbness (and tingling) in the thumb is a symptom of carpal tunnel, or more local minor nerve damage due to trauma. In cricket, for a right handed batsman, the left hand is in a forward position, and more likely to be hit when batting, and catching a cricket ball can, as you know, make your hands tingle as the sensory nerves complain.

So it’s likely to be either local trauma or very early CTS. If it’s local, it will go away, if it’s CTS the third and fourth fingers will join in with symptoms.

I hope that they didn’t operate on both wrists are the same time with your mate, unless he had a very good friend to wield the Andrex:confused:
