Hi Everyone, I have had type 2 for a number of years but I'm ashamed to say that, until last year, I buried my head in the sand. Unfortunately last year my hba1c was at 130 with my blood sugar at 31 Since then I have been trying much harder to get back on track with my last results being hba1c @ 44 and my blood sugars around 9. Can I as everyone, based on a daily intake of around 2,000 calories, how many grams of carbohydrate can I have per day? I had understood at 4 calories per gram and at 50% of my calorie intake I can have 250g of carbs. It was something I read but I'm more than likely completely wrong. I'm confused.

To answer your carb question - you can have as many carbs as you can tolerate, ie that don’t push your blood sugar up. You might find that’s a lower percentage of your overall calories than 50%, and most Type 2s eat significantly less carbs per day than 250g.

Are you on any meds and do you test your own blood sugar?
 
Many people concentrate on carbohydrates as it is those that convert to glucose. If they are following a low carbohydrate dietary regime then low carb would be less than 130g per day but many do have less than that. But as said it rather depends on what an individual can tolerate and they would determine that by testing blood glucose before and 2 hours after eating. It may also depend on what if any medication people are taking.
That said you have done amazingly well to get your level down so something you are doning must be working for you.

Wow! what an amazing turnaround in your diabetes management. Huge congratulations, and really well done for all the effort you have been putting in.

Have you lost weight as part of your efforts? Whatever strategies you have been employing have obviously suited you really well.

Are you now looking to move into more of a maintenance phase? Or are the strategies you used to improve your HbA1c sustainable long-term?

Perhaps you might find one of these Diabetes UK meal plans a useful source of inspiration?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I'm currently taking Victosa and 1 x Metformin but my weight is hardly changing. I'm 17 stones ( 5 feet 7 inches ) but want to get down to 14 stones. This mornings breakfast was Porridge with a tiny tiny amount of Stevia. I am 100% off of alcohol and very rarely have a biscuit and no chocolate now.

Hi, Thank you for the reply and confidence boost, much appreciated. My main focus just now is weight loss. I'm 17 stone, 5 feet 7 inches, and want to get down to 14 stones. Weight loss has always been easy in the past and I could easily lose 3 or 4 stones when I focused on it but over the past year or two it has been difficult ( I am 62 ) I'll keep trying, my wife and I started doing home Zumba last night, great fun, great exercise as a team, it's free ( apart from buying the DVD ) and hopefully it will help my weight. The target is to do it 3 times a week and slowly & steadily build up the time and effort. Cheers - Jim
 
Hi Everyone, Something seems strange. I am currently 17 stones and desperately want to get down to 14. I have recently changed my eating and drinking habits. I drink zero alcohol and no fizzy drinks. My normal home drink is now plain water with a touch of Rose's lime juice for some flavour. I have been eating healthier for several weeks but only started to record things today. My days carb intake was 98grams with my calories being only 937 I will have next to nothing all night now, just 1 x cup of tea with a dash of milk and a qtr tea spoon of Stevia. Can anyone suggest why my weight is not changing? My son in law is a GP and I asked if my medication could be the problem but he says no. Any suggestions?
 
If you changed your diet a few weeks ago but only just starting recording then you may have lost some weight initially and your body is just adjusting, give it time to have an effect.

The only problem is that it has something called Sucralose in it. Is this bad for someone who has diabetes? Thanks - Jim p.s. I have the flavoured sparking water which most supermarkets do, although Aldi had none the other day. It is virtually zero carbs. They use sucralose and acesulfane K and I don't find it causes any problem.
Some people are sensitive to artificial sweeteners or don't use for ethical reasons.

Thanks Leadinglights, I really enjoy the water with a bit of lime but I'm trying to do the right thing.

You are 100% correct, as long as it doesn't do any harm Tonight I had 2 bowls of home made lentil & bacon soup with lots of veg and very few potatoes followed by 1 x slice of protein bread from Morrisons. Expensive at £2 for 5 slices but really worth it. I didn't realise the calories in butter till my son in law pointed it out. Wow ! ! !

Yes but it is carbs you need to worry about not calories and butter has no carbs.
If you are not testing just be careful about having a meal with lentils, potato and bread. How many carbs are there in that bread as it looks really nice.
Just looked it up and it seems as if it is 7g carb per slice so pretty good.

Thanks, I didn't realise about the calories. Is that still the case if I'm trying the lose 3 stones? I prefer butter to Flora and to be honest I use it sparingly. Are lentils not good either? The bread was delicious by the way. The other bread I use is brown nimble.

I just checked the Lentils. Carbs = 17g per 100g and the full pot of soup uses 125g lentils.
