Type 2
Two months ago, I was prescribed both Lipitor and Lisinopril to manage both cholesterol and blood pressure. I am Type 2 and on humalog, lantus and metmorphin.

Whilst there has been some improvement in my blood pressure - my sugar levels have started to go a bit haywire.

I used to wake up to 6.4 to 7.2 now it can be anything. Today it was 14.9, yesterday 11.6. I have not made any changes to diet or routine.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have also started getting pain in my neck and back, but it may not be related at all to the tablets.

When I told the doctor she literally brushed it aside and said to tell the diabetic nurse and not to stop the tablets. So I told the diabetic nurse, but she suggested entire insulin needs to be reviewed by specialist (scheduled for 2 months time).

When I suggested perhaps stopping the tablets I am on, she brushed it aside and suggested more tablets to help manage some hormone.

Any advice would be helpful.

Nothing to do with either of those drugs - much much more likely frankly, that your Beta cells are accelerating on their way out, and you definitely need an increase in at least some of your insulin levels - do you not adjust those yourself yet? - does the consultant you see for the diabetes - or is this the first time? - not also have a person known as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse you could either phone for advice or make an appointment to see, in the interim?

Even if you haven't seen the 'main man' yet - most DSNs are mega helpful ! - it's what they are there for - to assist us to lead normal lives day to day - not sit there and tell us what to do - they suggest strategies!

Thank you Jenny.

I always adjust my insulin levels myself (I've been diabetic since 2003). I noticed that my normal doses and normal post dinner adjustments were just not enough. I started increasing these and it still didn't work. I increased them full whack last night and I was 6.6 this morning.

I can't wait to see the endocronologist because my dosages are now massive: 70 of humalog for each meal and 90 of lantus! Something needs to change!

Hi JTI, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear you are having problems with your levels :( As Jenny says, I can't think that the new medications can be responsible for the blood sugar response, must just be coincidence. Just wondering if there are other ways you might improve your levels - have you taken a close look at your diet, and whether you tolerate the various elements well or not? Forgive me if these are things you have considered! Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S and see if it might help. Are you able to get regular exercise? This can help make you much more sensitive to the insulin, hopefully lowering levels and possibly even needing a lowering of insulin doses. The main problems with high insulin doses is that they don't work as well as smaller ones - by that I mean that the larger the dose, the less efficient it becomes in your body. There are also some medications that can help your body use insulin more efficiently called GLP-1 receptor agonists (they end in 'tide' e.g. exenatide, liraglutide, and go by trade names such as Victoza, Byetta, Bydureon) - I wonder if this is the hormone the nurse was thinking about? Also known as 'lizard spit', because their formulation is based on the saliva of the Komodo Dragon lizards! 😱 🙂
