We went out for tea yesterday. The hostess had gone to considerable trouble to provide things that I could have to eat which included making a fresh lemon cheesecake. I have not had any sweet things for over two years but felt it would be very rude to say no, as she had made it specially for me, so I had a small piece. It was delicious! A very naughty but Happydog was I! It got me wondering what things do others have as a treat and how often? 🙂
 
I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed the cheesecake, everyone deserves a treat and a (if only brief) escape from the daily abstentions 🙂 I think that this is probably a much greater issue for people who are not on insulin, since they have no 'opposing force' to act on the raised levels of sugar/carbs. It can, of course, also be an issue for people on insulin, since it can be difficult to estimate the peaks of treats and insulin, plus I also find that high carb meals/treats requiring higher doses are far less predictable!

That said, I am fairly relaxed about my treats. I think that the running helps a lot meaning that I am more sensitive to insulin, plus I actually need more carbs - and sometimes need them to be quick-acting! Here's what I have had so far today:

Breakfast: 1 slice of Burgen toast. I am not a big breakfast eater, plus I am a lot more insulin-resistant in the mornings.

Lunch: Ham salad sandwich, banana, yoghurt and a Penguin biscuit. The insulin dose for all this was the same as for my breakfast of 1 slice! 😱

I usually have something sweet to accompany my main meals. Recently I have been having a bowl of ice-cream and tinned fruit, and usually a chocolate biscuit to follow up.

My favourite treat would probably be a whole Battenburg cake, mostly because I love marzipan, but I think I'm too disciplined to actually go for it, insulin or not!

I'm sure all this sounds like a huge amount to some people! 😱
 
My DSN'd have a fit!!! Might just translate it and show it to her - tee hee. She's one of those that enjoys telling you what you CAN'T eat from now on (and what she says is outdated anyway).

We're all different. Ice-cream's fine, and small amounts of chocolate, but most other treats send me into hyperspace. Oh well. Luckily, I like fresh fruit.😛
 
Good to hear you enjoyed your cheesecake treat happydog 🙂

My occasional treat is a piece of coffee swiss roll, I unwind and eat the sponge first followed by the buttercream, the dollop of buttercream in the centre of the swiss roll makes it well worth the insulin 🙂
 
I was never, ever, a sweet-liking person but there are times when I need something sweet. I am a great fan of Haagen Dazs Belgian chocolate ice cream and I will occasionally have a tablespoon or two (understatement of the century) after dinner. I also have a huge box of Nestle Rioja chocolates and maybe I will have 2 or 3 a week - also after dinner instead of the ice cream. I look forward to those times and don't feel the slightest bit guilty. Every 10 days or so I make a farmhouse fruit cake and I always have a slice of that before I go to bed, washed down with a cup of hot chocolate and brandy. Then again I sleep for between 11 and 12 hours a night so I tell myself that I need that to get me through the night - it works!

Hi Happydog I'm so glad you enjoyed your treat.
I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone who's read my posts that chocolate is my thing. I'm still struggling to get properly back on track after easter Whilst not being really bad I've not resisted as much as I usually do and it shows on my meter.
When I'm in control I have 2 squares of Lindt 70% daily.
 
Thanks for your replies. My indiscretion does not seem to have had any lasting effect. I will be good again now. TY for the link andbreathe, some interesting recipes on there. Tempted to try some of them. I am still learning every day thanks to the kind people on this forum. I am truly amazed at some of the treats that you have. I am still to scared to do too many as my doctor is so certain that my current work and results is only a temporary thing. Very tempted to try a small amount of ice cream, but it does have a lot of sugar. 🙂
 
Some of the better quality ones aren't tooooo bad, if you select carefully. Or, you could always make your own? If you Google sugar-free Icecream, you'll find lots of recipes. Ditchthecarbs even has one, I fancy making myself some time; and it doesn't need an Icecream maker:

Personally, I'm a little and often treater, I like dark chocolate and I like a choux pastry treat, both of which are lower carb than most sweet treats. I've actually had to eat more quick release carb since being on insulin than I did before because I'm so insulin sensitive which is quite ironic 🙄 I'm a bit peculiar with starchy food (always have been even before the diabetes) I don't like feeling full, so a three course meal is my idea of hell, hence my little and often technique. If you like icecream but want something lower carb you can freeze greek yoghurt (I believe the Americans call it FroYo, get them 🙂), I make frozen yogurt with flaked almonds and honey (you don't need a lot of honey and there's no reason why you can't use liquid sweetener if preferred), but if you have a serious blender you can make ice cream on demand using frozen fruit and cream or greek yoghurt (low fat works too but you need more frozen fruit or ice cubes because the lack of fat makes it harder, don't know why!). I make peanut butter and banana frozen yoghurt in the blender for the Godson who loves it and he's got no idea it has no added sugar (whole peanut butter nothing added), but for that one I freeze the yoghurt and the banana so the blender has a tough time 🙂. I'll stop rambling about frozen yoghurt now because it sounds like I'm obsessed! Although I will add to that by saying you can make lollies too which are rather nice in hot weather!

Another forum I use has a fabulous thread entitled "What have you eaten today" which was started in January 2013, which runs to 379 pages, and 7580 (and counting) posts. There are some astonishingly wonderful things on there, and some thing that, frankly, are just way too "outré" for me.

Google away. You'll be astonished what you find.
