I am not worried about the carbs, just whether it is safe to eat uncooked.

Our mulberry tree has finally produced fruit, and I remember that when I gathered black mulberries a few years back I was told that you shouldn't eat them uncooked. Ours is a white mulberry, which strangely is red in colour.

Anyone know about these things?

Having had a quick look, I think you can eat them raw but no-one recommends it as they taste horrible and you get the stem stuck in your teeth.

Interestingly, the white mulberry (which as you've found, is actually red, although confusingly there is also a red mulberry too) is supposedly a traditional treatment for diabetes in Chinese medicine.

I would also avoid wearing any clothes you particularly like when harvesting as apparently the berries are extremely squishy and extremely stainey....

Yes, latex gloves picking the black ones because you can't get the stain off your fingers for days.
I thought it was the mulberry leaves which are the chinese remedy for diabetes. That all I have ever seen in Hong Kong and Singapore shops when asking what they sell for diabetes.
