I?ve been working on improving my breakfast recently, so I thought I would share some of my results so far and see what other suggestion there are.

I don?t have all that much time for my breakfast, my normal routing is to get up and in the shower around 6:30am, I?m usually in the kitchen by 7am and I need to be out of the house by 7:20 am to get to work. So in the past it?s been a case of grab some cereal and run (after making my wife?s sandwiches).

My fasting blood sugar currently bounces around between 7.5 and 8.0 mmol/L (I need to get that lower!).

So, current results (all results at 1 hour):

Jordans Oat Granola (50-60g) : 12.2 mmol/L
Oat so Simple Apple and Blueberry: 11.7 mmol/L
Alpro Soya Yogurt: 10.1 mmol/L
1 slice toasted Burgen Bread: 9.6 mmol/L
Scrambled Egg: 8.35 mmol/L (mean of two readings)

I seem to have significant glucose intolerance in the mornings. Most of the above won?t raise my blood sugar significantly if I eat them at lunchtime or in the evening.

I?m planning to test next Fromage Frais and mixed nuts, Burgen Bread with Peanut Butter and sliced meats. Maybe also I?ll try some smoked fish (a few minutes in the micro from frozen) and on a weekend when I have more time, perhaps bacon, egg, sausage or a stuffed mushroom!

I know to try would be Alan C?s stew, but that?s not something that would be easy for me to do - mostly due to a serious lack of freezer space if I made up a batch.

Does anyone else seem to have a greater reaction to carbs in the morning? Any other suggestions for things to try?

My needs differ hugely between breakfast and lunchtime. For example, I need 7 units for a single slice of toast in the morning, and only 8 units for a sandwich, yoghurt and biscuit at lunch. By the evening, I only need around 9-10 units for a full meal.

When I was younger, I would have 2 units for a slice of toast, or 4 units for a (man-size portion) bowl of cornflakes.
Now, I need 8 units for 1 piece of toast :(
I too, have been experimenting, although not to the extent that Mark has:
2 weetabix, splash of semi-skimmed: 6 units - not adequate! Will try 8 soon.
2 scottish pancakes (breakfast on the hoof!), toasted, unadulterated - 8 units OK.
I never thought eggs affected me but, on reading other posts, have decided to check these at the weekend.

PS. like Northy, my insulin needs drop, later in the day.

I'm the same.... I can eat 2 slices of Bergen with a sandwich filling (meat or tuna etc) for lunch without my levels going up too much .... but for breakfast I can't even have a slice of Bergen toasted with butter or peanut butter without spiking.

if you haven't got the room in your freezer for the Oz Alan Stew then make up a small batch like I do.... enough for just an evening meal for 2 and about 3 breakfasts (not very cost effective really... but it works for me).... I freeze them in freezer bags which can be squashed into a small space in the freezer. so I have my evening meal and the next morning I eat the stew again and then freeze the other 2 portions for later in the week or following week.

a nice quick breakfast is hard boiled egg (boiled the night before) and some cooked meats.... ham is nice... and very continental:D

The good old insulin resistance again eh.............in the morning everyone's body is working against the insulin with a cocktail of other hormones......so if your a type 2 on no insulin, it naturally will be hard to pick a food that will give you no grief.............

I suppose also the cells of our muscles etc need to be warmed up to accept the fuel too after a long period of inactivity............:D

I am the same. I need 34 units for 2 slices of granary toast and 1 poached egg for breakfast but would only need 6 units for the same food at lunch time! Its crazy!

I am also trying to experiment with breakfast recenty but so far have found nothing better than poached eggs on toast that will last me until lunch

Hi Guys,

I felt in a rebellious mood this morning and really fancied a couple of slices of toast with Marmite. This is good quality bakers brown bread and quite expensive. It's a bit like wheaten bread and absolutely delicious.

On waking this morning. 6.2
1 hour after eating 2 x slices of toast and Marmite - 7.4
2hrs 40 minutes after breakfast - 5.9

which really surprised me. I'm far higher if I have porridge which I love, but just fancied a change.

So maybe, just maybe, it's the white bread that really spikes me. Garlic bread is an absolute no,no as is nan bread any type and I can't even look at a baguette. I'll try having exactly the same tomorrow and see what the results are then.

Donna🙂

That's a really nice result, Diabetes seems to have expensive tastes 😉

I can add to my results:

3x Herta Frankfurters: 7.9 mmol/L - note: this is a delta of zero! It had no affect on me
Fromage Frais & Nuts - 8.8 mmol/L
1 Slice Burgen Bread with Whole Earth Peanut Butter - 10.1 mmol/L (but was very tasty)

I'm going to try Greek Style yogurt next week - Fromage Frais is just a tad bitter for my palate right now.

A 40g bowl of Scotch Oats made with half water and milk together with mixed seeds and berries is about roughly 40g of carbohydrate, I inject 4 units to cover this but the same carb value at lunch requires 6 units of novorapid. Northerner posting about his breakfast spike yesterday prompted me to test this morning more than I usually do, so here are my results-

Waking 4.9

80 minutes later 6.8

2 1/2 hours 4.5 -ate a 10g snack

4 hours after 6.1

Now eating lunch and was 5.9

Without the snack I would gone hypo, 4.9 is quite low for me and usually wake between 5.5-6.5, what I should have done was eaten 10g more with my breakfast or reduced the dose by 1 unit, pleased I spotted the 4.5🙂

My breakfast today was fresh fruit salad with apple, blueberries and strawbs. Waking BG was 6.1 and I was up to 7.2 two hours later. I'm now 5.8 and about to have lunch.
