Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
hi. I'm new to the forum thing so bear with me. I am a type 1 diabetic have been for 29 years. Now aged 37. I have work glasses for 10 years or so and for last 5 have had disposable contact lenses just for "going out" purposes. I have recently taken up sport and could do with wearing them for that but am wondering if as diabetics we are allowed to have the monthly disappsable kind that we wear on and off for a month as I'm are I was told disposable dailys were my only option. Does anyone in my position have monthly contact lenses. Thanks for any help U can provide me with

Hi Lisa
I have had monthly disposable, daily and the none disposable kind and there was no suggestion any were more or less suitable for my eyes. I've actually largely stopped wearing them because my eyes get too dry when wearing them, but I had dry eyes with contacts before the diabetes so there's no real connection there. The only thing I can think of is the daily disposables have a version that's supposed to be moisturising and allow easy transmission of oxygen to the eye, not sure if the "moisturising" version is available as monthly option, and I was told dailies reduce the risk of infection. So it could just be a cautious approach given we have to be careful with our eyes in general and may not rid ourselves of infection as easily. I can't honestly think of any other reason. Maybe ask the optician for an explanation and then get a second opinion from another optician? They may have different opinions, my regular optician said the dryness I experience with contact lenses wouldn't cause any issues, the opthalmic surgeon I see for something totally unrelated advised against contact lenses because I experience discomfort. if you do find out more about why one might be more suitable than the others let me know, I still keep a few pairs for special occasions so I'd be interested to find out 🙂

Thanks thanks for that. I think the infection reason must be the one. Definitely going to look into It further when I have an appointment and be sure to report back

I have not been able to wear contact lens for years because of dry eye problem and that was well pre Diabetes.

I wear dailies. I was also advised against monthlies by the optician. I think it's just the being cautious about eye infections etc.
I find my eyes get a bit dry with dailies as it is, so I'll stick with them o think, even thi Go the monthlies would be 50% cheaper!

I changed to daily contact lenses on the advice of my ophthalmologist at a contact lens clinic I go to. I've only got sight in one eye and was having issues with blood vessels in my seeing eye growing abnormally in my cornea desperately looking for oxygen. I've found daily lenses much more comfortable than the monthly ones with less dry eyes and no infections but I have 2 lens free days in the week to give my eyes a rest.

Hi Lisa

I remember being told by the optician at the time when diagnosed that I wouldn't be able to wear contacts. At that stage I think there were only soft, hard and gas permeable. Can't remember the reason given why I couldn't have them but basically from then on just stuck with my glasses - although glasses have proved to be a bit of a pain over the years when doing sport etc. Decided to try contacts a couple of years ago and the optician said no problem. She didn't say I couldn't have any particular sorts so I had a trial of monthly disposables but in the end went for the daily disposables due to the frequency I was using them (once or twice a week). I was getting dry eyes as well with contacts but use Systane Ultra drops which seems to have helped.

I use disposable dailies, really because I use them from time to time, and I prefer not to have to think when I last used a lens, and whether I needed to swap out. I just crack open a new blister each time I want to use lenses.

A bit like glasses, there are a number of retailers online who are happy to deliver to your prescription, as often or infrequently as you choose. I just buy what I need, rather than be contracted for a monthly supply regime.

I use Monthly disposables all the time, I wear them for Swimming, Running, Cycling without any problems. I don't change them religiously and I've never had any problems with them.
