Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I’m new to type2 diabetes , I struggle to drink a lot having bladder issues , but try my best. I don’t like water at all and manage about 1.75 pints a day , I don’t drink tea, I drink weak black coffee rest of the day have treat of a latte once a day . I don’t have sugar in any of my drinks . Spoke to my nurse yesterday she suggested milk and mentioned milk in green cartons should have asked what make she just said you can get it in the supermarket she said it tasted lovely .
I buy semi skimmed milk which is in a green carton but it doesn’t taste too refreshing as in a glass of milk, what do you all drink milk wise ? Thought about a glass of milk before bed

Can't remember the last time I used dairy milk but I'd guess it was pre-diagnosis. My go to now is unsweetened almond milk as that's zero carb.

If I was to drink milk then I think I'd see how tolerant I was with full fat milk. It just tastes so much better than anything else and the added fat content over semi-skimmed isn't that much. It's the lactose which I'd be more concerned about though.

Could she have meant the lactose free milks perhaps? They generally taste like semi-skimmed.

I am not and never have been a big milk drinker.
Have you tried herbal teas?

Colin she may have meant lactose I don’t even know what that is but you would have thought she would have used the word lactose to make sure what I was looking for. I am soon to be 72 and think I need more calcium for my bones which almond milk doesn’t have , didn’t realise what a minefield milk was
groves I can’t stand any teas even herbal I can taste tannin in all of them and that’s the taste that makes me gip

This is the big brand for lactofree milk but I think most of the big supermarkets now have their own labels too.

@Outofsorts herbal teas don't contain tannin and there are many different types with many different flavours so it could be worthwhile trying some different ones. I think Twinnings do a mixed pack. Personally, I don't like the taste of hibsicus, rosehip and camomile but drink mint, lemon and ginger, redbush and others more than "real tea". I don't drink any coffee.

Meanwhile on the lactose front, do you like yoghurt? I believe that contains calcium which could help with your bones.

I'm thinking the same that she may have just meant semi skimmed, go cautiously with a glass before bed though as it may spike your BG xx

I think it was a nightly glass of milk which sort of became a habit for me that finally pushed me over the edge into diabetes from pre.

I wasn't quite sure what you are asking here or why the nurse was suggesting you drank milk, Is it some way of increasing fluids because you need to. I assume you are saying you do drink the water in addition to the coffee you are drinking so your fluid intake doesn't seem too bad. Have you tried flavoured still or sparkling water instead of plain water?
Both caffeinated tea and coffee can be irritating to the bladder and cause frequent loo visits which in turn can cause dehydration.
Fruit teas do not usually contain caffeine but are an acquired taste

Hi Leadinglights I probably havnt made myself clear, I told my nurse I didn’t drink enough liquids and struggled to drink water so she suggested I tried milk as in a low fat one, I told her I didn’t care for drinking semi skimmed and she told me to try the one in a green carton. I will have to get back to her to find out , just thought someone may have had a recommendation. Sparkling water is not allowed with my bladder problems and neither is procceco lol
Flavoured water doesn’t this have sugar in ? I drink decaf coffee just need to up my fluids a bit

The ones we have don't have sugar but do have sweeteners which I know some people can't tolerate, but they don't really taste that sweet. Normal cows milk of any type is 13g carb per half pint so you would need to check of you could tolerate it. I don't know about any of the nut milks.

Hi @Outofsorts You could try Koko coconut milk. I have the Original. It’s fortified with calcium. It has 2.4g carbs per 100ml so less than half that of cows milk. It tastes nice, and you can get it fresh or longlife, Original or Unsweetened.

If you don’t like water much, maybe a nice still bottled water would be ok? Evian and Volvic are both very smooth and haven’t got that weird taste like tap water. You could also try a water filter. Or, if you’re allowed sweeteners, a dash of sugar-free squash like Summer Fruits or Orange and Pineapple.

I like unsweetened almond milk with some double cream mixed in. If you are concerned about calcium intake then plenty of cheese in your diet would sort that out. Or tinned sardines or pilchards.

Hi Inka thanks for the tip on koko coconut milk unfortunately it has high fat content and I have to lose 4 stone , but I am going to try a better quality bottled water instead of tap water see if I enjoy that a bit more watch this space

@Outofsorts consuming fat does not stop you from losing weight, many people choose to follow a low carb high fat diet or in fact a keto diet which both contain a lot of fat yet the followers lose the weight they wanted/needed to xx

I feel milk is bad for you, I'm not sure why I feel that though. A gut feeling. I luvs milk, ice cold with a slab of Cadbury's, don't go there! :D I think at some point milk will be the next 'baddie' we should never have. You can live on it though, so I dunno. It's for baby cows really, not meant for us. The Asians don't have it all I don't think and they're okay.

I should have stressed that this coconut milk is a dairy substitute and not like the tins of high fat milk you might buy for cooking, either in look, taste or fat content.

Koko comes in one litre cartons and is In the chilled milk cabinet (for the fresh) or on the shelf with the other long-life milks (for the long-life version, which is also in a one litre carton) @Outofsorts

Just checked my carton - Koko has 1.9g fat per 100ml which is approx the same as semi skimmed milk which is 1.8g per 100ml. So low in fat 🙂

Ah that makes a difference Inka I have a Tesco order going in tonight will try it thanks, will let you know what I think , hope you’ve got your tin helmet on if I don’t lol

On a low fat low calorie high carb diet I was almost spherical, and when I switched back to low carb with normal fats I lost 12 inches off my waist and 50lb without trying.
The advice given about losing weight is simply wrong for me. It doesn't work.
