Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I am travelling to Paris on Eurostar in the near future, and am having some trouble finding out what food is served at lunchtime in Standard Premier class. Has anybody had any recent experience of meals on Eurostar. I do not know whether to order a diabetic meal (if so what did it consist of) of go for a standard meal. Can anybody offer any advice?
Thank you

I've never travelled on Eurostar, but on planes I never request a diabetic meal; just wait until food arrives, estimate carbohydrate content and inject. Typically, "diabetic meals" are low carbohydrate and low fat.

Hi Jane.

If it were me (oh I wish 🙄) I would wait to see the menu and order whatever sounds easiest to work out carb-wise without being too high GI. I tend not to worry too much about one off meals like that as long as they're not too often. You could maybe guess it best you can then test a couple of times and adjust accordingly.

Bon voyage.🙂

Rob

It's only a 'light' meal and the standard sample menu confirms this
Mimolette cheese with Li?ge
white pudding and radish
- - -
Tortilla with smoked ham,
potatoes and Maredsous
cheese, tomato sauce and
Parmesan
- - -
Salmon & herb rillettes with
cucumber and blinis
The only thing I'd concerned about is getting hungry if it's a long time to the next meal as I suspect there won't be a lot!

I'm going in May so I'll be very interested in your trip report, including the menu. But as I'm booked in the cheapest class on a 60+ discount (saves a whole euro 🙂) the menu may not be the same.

I NEVER order a diabetic meal on any form of transport or in any circumstances. This is from my blog post on air travel as a type 2; I'm not sure if it has any relevance for my up-coming "rail, plane and boat across Europe" odyssey but I follow the technique as a general principle when on board planes, trains and boats:

Never, ever, ring in advance to advise that you have diabetes and wish to have a "diabetic" meal. If you do, be ready to eat a meal that will commence with a bread roll, followed by a main of low-fat starch, with sides of starch, washed down with fruit juice, followed by a piece of fruit and a dessert of low-sugar rice pudding or similar.

Instead, I have a standard procedure. I wait until the initial boarding rush is over and I can catch the attention of the steward. I advise the steward that I have diabetes that I manage with a strict diet. Then I patiently nod and smile through the set "you should have advised us in advance so we could have provided a special diabetic meal for you". I apologise for not doing so and request a look at the menu of the day. I then choose the least bad choice. Failure to do this means you are risking no choice at all when they run out of the beef casserole and you find that pasta and rice is the only choice left. On two notable occasions, when there were no remotely acceptable choices, the senior steward suggested that I might prefer something from the business class menu. You get a different class of service on Qantas and Air New Zealand.

Just go for the standard meal and leave what you don't think is suitable. Never understood why they have ''diabetic meals'' as they don't differ much to standard meals, in all my travels I've never had a problem with the food and simply dose adjust to the carbs on the plate depending upon my appetite. Never been on Eurostar so can't talk from experience, but as it's such a short journey time you could always eat before boarding or when you reach France, just be sure to carry some snacks in your bag in case of delays or a breakdown.

If you've got an at seat meal I wouldn't worry too much. I'd be cautious if I were relying on the buffet car though, every time I travel Eurostar they seem to run out of most things before we reach the tunnel, so I always make sure I have something with me.

I probably wouldn't be too concerned about the at seat meal - they're usual;ly so small they can't POSSIBLY do any damage..

i would personally take food with me, cause there could be delays or anything happen!

Thanks for all your responses - really helpful. Will log on and let you know what the meal is like when we get back. Thanks again....
