Ok so my daughter is having her freind over in a mo and my misses said we will treat them to mc donalds....i can't remember the last time i had a take-away...well apart from the crispy duck for are anniversary 🙄....would it not be rude not to indulge in a burger with fries and milkshake?? ( koffs maybe two burgers ) 😱 he he....what you think then...i got 2 hours to make my mind up!!!!! and i no a lot of you will go urghhhhhh burger...but i sooooo miss them...shall i take this rare one of chance to enjoy some bad food????

It depends. What are you BGs like with high-carb meals?

There's nothing inherantly wrong with eating in McDonald's but you need to make sure your body can metabolise everything correctly.

What you can do is cut down the carbs - something I'd particularly recommend at McD's as the bread is very sweet.

So here's some tips for making it better.

Take one or two of the buns off your burger - you really won't notice that much of a difference in overall taste but it has a massive impact on your BG. For instance, a BK Bacon Double Cheeseburger with a bun takes me something like 12u to process. Without the bun, I don't actually need insulin. That's how bad it is.

Either for a small fries portion or swap the fries for carrot sticks.

Milkshakes are tough because they're high in fat and sugar. You could give it a try and see how you respond but personally I'd just go for the Coke Zero as it's less hassle.

Whatever you do, test before you eat and then test 2 hours after - the magnitude of your BG swing give you an idea of how much you need to cut down/substitute or how much you can add back in.

Chuck away the buns - the meat and cheese are fine, don't have too many fries and forget the milkshake (too much sugar). Just my opinion! 🙂

Chuck away the buns????? 😱 omg alan!!!!!......it's like teaseing yourself...hmmmm i no your right tho 😛.....ok ditch the milkshake ditch the fries....im gunna go for the new cheddar burger....WITH BACON!!!!!...as a trial..i will test before then 2 hours after and see what the differance is....but only as a trial of coarse!!! 😉

Yuk, McDonald's - do they sell anything edible there? 🙄

Well enjoy 😛 It will be interesting to read what sort of numbers you get. There is a website (somewhere) that details the nutritional content of McDonald's food so you can get an idea of the numbers.

If you really wanted you could try one with a bun, as DeusXM says you could test before and after to see how your body tolerates it. There's a lot of fat involved and that will slow down the digestion so have less of an impact on your levels than if you were eating the buns on their own 🙂

ok....so i have just done a reading and 5.3......amazing really...just lately it's been very low last night after a roast dinner wich i never eat anymore was 3.8 two hours after eating...which i was shocked.

Great news - it pushed your BG up a bit but not by a huge amount. So, could be good for the odd treat and now you know how much this meal will affect you by.

I know the 'no-bun' thing seems odd - I tend to half bun it by keeping the bottom bun. I have to lift the top bun to get out the gerkin anyway so I then replace it with some of the fries. Cuts down the overall carb count of the meal and means you get to keep the tasty carbs rather than the boring ones.

Been once with the little one for a McDonalds and she was fine with happy meal, carbs were on the wrappings which was one bonus, and we extended her bolus via the pump. BG's didn't suffer as a result of all those carbs 🙂

Totally understand - given your BG result, I'm not convinced you need to give up the buns anyway.

You're right though, it's a pain having to cut stuff out. Most of my diet stuff is about finding 'cheats' that mean I don't feel like I'm missing out - making mash out of cauliflower, using tortillas instead of rolls for burgers, having gravy instead of fries at KFC, using bacon or cheese slices instead of bread (the last one's a good 'un!). But anything you can keep in, keep in. There is rather militant school of thought that demands you give up all carbs regardless of circumstances but I think it's more about a pragmatic approach - find what works for you, keep the stuff that works and makes you happy in, chuck out the stuff that doesn't work for you.

To true....i completley agree 🙂

I've always found that if I have a McD's I have to have another as I'm still hungry afterwards. I was more of a Burger King person in any case.

Although, if I do want a burger I often opt for one from one of my nearby pubs which does a really nice big burger with lots of toppings and served with chips. I often drop the top bun off that as it wouldn't fit in my mouth otherwise. But then at ?7 per burger, it's not quite the same price league as a McD's / Burger King so unfair comparison really 😉
