Light breakfast ideas please

Hi Everyone.... so I am having an ultrasound scan to investigate some health issues, and my appt letter says no food for 4hrs before the scan, I see online that they advise a light breakfast. My scan is at 10.30 so I i will have to eat at 6.00 am and will likely not get to eat again until 11.00 assuming the scan is on time and takes no longer than 30 mins... it is a long time for me as I usually feel a bit sick/weird after 4 hrs if I don't eat. I am type 2.

Greek yoghurt and some berries, scrambled egg on a thin slice toast.
Something like a Nature Valley or KIND protein nut bar.
What do you normally have for breakfast.
It may depend on what medication you are on.

I usually have porridge, sometimes with some blueberries. My medication is metformin and empagliflozin 10mg, but even with those I have to watch it with the blueberries. I have a sachet of porridge, just the plain normal porridge and semi skimmed milk. I just think porridge may not be the best option on that morning. I will take something to eat with me for after the scan as after 5 ish hours i will feel weird/sick.

It is more likely that it will be the porridge that is the problem if you struggle with high blood glucose and indeed blueberries are the highest carb of the berries so you could swap those for strawberries or raspberries which are lower.
Some people tolerate oats and some don't.

You shouldn’t be ill from not eating for 4 hours on those medications, they don’t cause hypos, you should be able to skip a meal no problems. Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

I think I’d be inclined to fast until 11am if i were in your shoes @Myrtle_11

It may not be your favourite sensation in the world, but it should be possible to get to 11am without too much discomfort. Perhaps aim to sleep in a little longer (depending on how long it will take you to get to your appointment)?

I second @everydayupsanddowns suggestion of sleeping later if possible and eat as soon as your scan is done. You could also try a light supper before you go to bed such as scrambled egg on single slice of toast. Hope it all goes well.

Hi... I apologise for not replying before now. In the end I opted to get up at 5.30 a.m., I had my normal breakfast and added some fruit. My scan was on time at 10.30 and all was good. I am usually feeling I need to eat every 4 hrs or feel sick, but I now wonder if it is more habit as I was not hungry and got home at 12.00 lunch time. It was a busy morning and no time to think about food lol having my porridge did not affect the scan. Thank you to all who replied.

Hi. Pleased the scan went well.

Have you tested your body's response to porridge. Those sachets are pretty highly processed and of course oats, like all grains, are about 65% carbohydrate, so whilst many GPs and nurses recommend porridge, it isn't always a good choice for people with diabetes, particularly those trying to at least partially manage their condition through diet. Many of us have creamy Greek style natural yoghurt with a few berries and mixed seeds as this is much lower in carbohydrates.

Hi...I realised the sachet I am using is 27g but the carbs are 15.5 and I am fine on that. I now have Scots porridge oats and am fine with them. I stay away from seeds as I have Diverticular Disease and seeds aggrivate it, the scan showed tiny gallstones, which is not great but I am just feeling blessed that my conditions can be managed. I will try the yoghurt suggestion though and I am fine with berries.

I also have a sachet of porridge for breakfast, no milk or berries just hot water. It keeps me full for hours. I just accept it is higher carb content than all my other meals. I test my bg every now and then simply to see porridge hasn't gone rogue on me.I usually find my bg is 5.4-6.4, whichever, I can live with either number. Tbh, would know what else to eat for breakfast reakfast, early starts mean am in no state to start boiling eggs etc.

I am going try my new scots porridge oats tomorrow with a larger portion as my sachets are 15.5 carbs and I think i can handle a few more and make it more filling...i will test and see the difference. I get similar numbers to you with my sachet.

Testing after two hours is the best way to find out for all foods. Good luck.
