Had a letter from consultant today, to GP (copied to me) saying that they found +1 protein in my urine when I last attended clinic and that I need tests done. What does this mean? I guess it means my kidneys aren't working properly?

I don't really know what +1 means but I suspect that the GP will redo tests to see if the problem has gone away - you can sometimes leak protein with water infections. It could be your kidneys but only the tests will show - you could call your surgery tomorrow and ask for a telephone consultation so that you can get the facts and find out what they want to do.

It may be that you have a urine infection or it maybe that the kidneys are starting to protest a little...

The first step it likely to be to determin whether you have a urined infection, a sample of urine to send off for testing... Might be a simple case of a course of antibiotics!

It's likely if they will review your control to see if introduction or a change in medication will improve your BG control..

They will already have a notion to your kidney function (cleaning the blood) as this is part of the blood test you have, include liver function, they may ask for a 24 hour urine test to see what the filtration of protien is like...

They may decide that if your BP is in the upper of normal range to introduce or increase BP tablets to help provide protection to help protect them..

But you will only know by speaking to your GP

But it sounds that at the moment your kidneys are only complaining and not going to pack up on you... As minor damage to the kidneys can be reversed with appropiate treatment

It could be any one of a number of things. It is best to see your doctor then whatever it is can be treated now before it gets any worse. That is if it needs treatment at all. But see your doctor as he is in the best position to advise.

Saw my GP this morning and there is still protein in my urine. Wasn't showing infection but a sample has been sent off to lab and I have a 5 day course of antibiotics to take to see if it makes a difference. Have to go back to see the nurse in 10 days to have another sample sent off to lab then decisions will be made after that. Am really hoping that it is a water infection but not looking that likely. :(

I hope it is a water infection, and you are better soon. You are getting things looked at, which is a big plus in getting early treatment if it is needed.

Hi At the moment just do what the Dr recommends 😉 ... Don't worry just yet ...... I Have had Protein in my urine and had the tests but unfortunately now have stage 4 of kidney Diease ,
They keep an eye on you regularly, and to get to my stage it had taken several years😉
PM me if you are really worried

Hi Newbs. It's good that they've picked up that there is something wrong so that they can sort it out for you. There is loads that can be done with medications etc. I hope that it can all be dealt with easily for you

i was diagnosed with that 3yrs ago mine was +4 i was put on medication which has kept it stable if it is your kidneys dont panic its not the end of the world it can be treated but if your kidneys are starting to protest against things which is very common in diabetes after a number of years your bgs have to be very stable to prevent it getting worse if you need any other info im happy to help

Hi newbs
Dont worry too much just yet - i had the same thing last year and it went away again without treatment. Just make sure that your doctors keep checking u and do what u can to control your blood sugar. best of luck with your next test.
stilltrying

Thank you everyone for your replies and support. This has got to me quite a bid and I am now trying to be positive but admittedly finding it difficult. It just feels like I'm banging my head against a brick wall at the moment, I find it hard because I kept things under control really well since diagnosis, until recently.

I was talking to a colleague on Friday and mentioned my results and he said "well, you took a risk having your second daughter, you shouldn't really have done that, should you."!!! I disagree as my control and HbA1c during both pregnancies was in the 5% range, not something he would understand though. He also said "eyesight is something diabetics have to worry about, but then you know that". Prat was one word I was thinking.

Sorry, that turned into more of a rant!
