Hi everyone, just thought I would check in after a rather lengthy hiatus! It's been a hectic year!
Riley has been diagnosed for almost 18 months now and has just been given the green light for the insulin pump Hopefully we will have it by the time he starts high school next year. Anyone who has or has had experience with the pump please leave me your thoughts about them as we would love to find out what people think the pros and cons of the pump are.
Hope everyone is well xx

Glad to see you back.
Was thinking the other day we had not seen you in a while.
Good news about the pump and good luck.

Hi. Good news about the pump.

Hi Stacey and Riley
So sorry to hear Riley has been dx as having Type1 diabetes ((((Huge hugs)))) but pleased that he has been given the green light for an insulin pump. We haven't met but I wish him all the luck in the world on his diabetes journey ~ both of you will have all the support you need from this forum. If at any time you feel like having a rant then please do rant here ~ we are a listening forum too. You may find the following link interesting. Take care x

Hello Stacey. Wild horses would not get my pump off me. Good for you & Riley getting the green lt 😉. Have a look at "Love my Pump" thread.

.... and the INPUT website http://www.inputdiabetes.org.uk/

We normally get much better control for more hours every day than it's possible to do with MDI - and most of us achieve better HbA1c results - and get rid of pesky repeating hypos caused by our former long-acting insulin profile (the timing and strength of its release into our blood stream) not exactly matching what our particular body really needs. If we eg suffer a delayed spike after eating certain things (the pizza effect etc) we can not just split the bolus - we can split it and drip it in over hours and hours if that's what we need.

It's just so much more sophisticated at delivering insulin than MDI.

The con is - it takes a while, and patience - to get basal rates at the right level - and in any case it's something we have to do a fair bit through life cos you know by now a lot of the many and varied things that affect our BG - differs every flippin day.

So when you find that eg every Tuesday when he has a games lesson and needs less insulin, he can have a totally different Basal rate pre-programmed in to account for that, and just swap to that when he goes to bed every Monday.

Life without a pump was so much harder and a lot less flexible.
Nothing would persuade me to give up my pump.
It is a lot of work at the start but worth all the effort.

My control is better, fewer hypos and hypers, and life is so much more flexible.

Hi Stacey, good to hear from you again 🙂 I hope that Riley has got to grips with things and that he has been managing OK without too many problems 🙂 Great news about the pump! I've never used one, but the one thing that people usually worry about is having to wear it (practically) all the time, although people do say you forget it's there after a week or two, plus, as Jenny says, it can be hard work to begin with, but so much better for fine-tuning control and giving greater flexibility, particularly when dealing with differing levels of activity 🙂 Good luck, let us know which pump he goes for, and how things go 🙂

Glad to hear you're all doing well. 🙂

Thanks everyone! Riley is very excited and is adamant that he wants the omnipod, although he is aware that he does have to trial others before making his final decision I'm pleased to read that there doesn't appear to be a lot of cons to the pump so fingers crossed!

My friends son has the omnipod (he's 8) and he wears an action man Velcro cover over it for school and sports, by all accounts he's doing very well with it.

@stephknits has an Omnipod and I believe she gets on very well with it 🙂

Am very happy with my omnipod, if you have any questions about it, please do ask. I go swimming with it and have no problems. I enjoy pimping my pods - as so my girls and love the freedom it brings

Hiya Stacey.🙂 It's great to hear that Riley's getting a pump.:D Let us all know how you get on...🙂
