Hi,
I'm always frightened of injecting for 1 course of food then injecting a second time if I then decide to eat more.

Please can someone explain exactly what insulin stacking is?

Hiya. Insulin stacking is where you give your insulin for your food and then 2 hours later maybe you test and decide you are too high and then give yourself some more insulin to bring you down while there is still insulin working in your system. Usually insulin takes about 3-5 hours to fully do its job for the food.

If you eat then bolus and then decide you want a pudding you can bolus for the carbs for the pudding as this isnt insulin stacking as long as you dont do a correction also!

Scary stuff - my endo is dead against it and, after a coupla nasty experiences, I'd rather sreer clear of it too! I know lotsa diabetics use correction doses on a regular basis...but do lots of testing, Gill, while you're learning this 'technique'.

I use correction doses and find it works for me. Even injecting just one unit of Humalog makes a significant difference to my next mealtime test, but be carefull dont over do it to begin with. Have a word with your DSN if you are in doubt.

Have you got the book "Using Insulin"? There's a useful chapter on how to use correction doses effectively. 🙂

I always thought that stacking was the cumulitive effect of multiple peaking doses as opposed to injecting for more food......

for example, if I decide to have something extra after a main meal, my pump would use my current BG, the active insulin and the bolus for the food and work out my dose......

so Gill, provided your previous dose is exactly right then you could just dose for the next item with the usual ratios......

but do we ever get the dose right? I would say not really, as were only human.....🙂
