That sounded dramatic didn't it 🙂

Just been at a meeting where they provided food. The food was a sandwich and a bag of crisps. So I bit the bullet because I was a bit hungry and had them. Just tested after 2 hours and for a 5.7 which is fine considering I was 5.8 this morning anyway.

Now of course I am not going to repeat this exercise. But at least I'm glad it didn't really move the needle so much. I didn't expect it to really, because it was the most meagre sandwich you'd ever see anyway, so calorifically and carb wise probably minimalist.

I'm still thinking about what might spike me. I had some nando's chicken the other day and didn't get a spike from that (mainly because it was dry as hell and I only had veg with it).

I guess I should keep a food diary for these sorts of occasions. Anyone else do that?

As a T1 I do this alot. As we are all different it's hard to say for sure what will and won't have a surprise effect. So its useful to record what you've been eating and where your bloods are at as a result. 🙂

I went to lunch with friends (one is celiacs and im swinging on the cusp of diabetes) She brought her own gluten free bread along and asked the chef to toast it so she could dip it in her baked Camembert (that was the only thing available to her!). So i sat there looking through the menu and the only thing i found which wasnt accompanied by either chips, mash, bread or pasta was a tuna steak on pok choi and some cucumber ensemble. So being good, i ordered this along with an extra side salad - It arrive and looked delish. But one mouthful told me the tuna was swimming in plum sauce! The cucumber was saturated in a sugar vinegar mixture and that was really sweet too ! It was all too sickly sweet . Im sure i pulled a Cliff Richard face because my friend asked if I was alright! LOL 😱

It's almost like there's some evil plot to kill us all off with sugar isn't it! I was happy to see that at least Nando's had some sides which weren't chips. Bloody expensive, but at least I had veg instead. I do see a lot of restaurant menu's and wonder where the low carb options are. Sadly not a lot of the places I've looked at yet have been particularly helpful in that regard. So I think maybe accepting that occasionally I can at least tolerate something a bit more carb heavy is the way to go. I had the sandwich our of curiosity as I've not eaten bread of any sort for 4 months.

Ok, so here we are two hours after my bacon & feta cheese quiche with salad and I get s 5.2 on the meter. Martin

Bacon and Feta Quiche sounds really nice, I'll add that to my list of foods to give a try.

There is always the option of 'fat head' dough for those who can't cope with normal pastry.
On the few occasions I have taken food out of the house to eat I usually have salad, cold fish or meat and a jelly with fruit in plus cream, which I add to my coffee as well. I have yet to feel envious of anyone else's meal.

6oz of mild cheese such as mozzarella or edam, grated or finely chopped.
3oz of ground almonds, sieved, or 4Tbsp of coconut flour.
2Tbsp of cream cheese
Mix together in a warm bowl, or warm in a microwave in short bursts. It only needs a very gentle warming - maybe 3 ten second bursts in the microwave, mixing in between
When the mixture is 'coming together' add an egg and mix in any flavouring you might like.
Roll out the dough between 2 layers of parchment or baking paper.
Can be used as a base for pizza or as a substitute for pastry.
Bake a disc of it for 12 to 15 minutes at 220 C then flip it over and remove the lower layer of paper. I put it back in the oven for two or three minutes before adding a topping.
Or make the dough rectangular and wrap around almost done sausages, bake as above to make sausage rolls. Allow the sausages to cool until they can be handled and skinned before wrapping. I turn the rols over half way through cooking to brown all over.

@Drummer Sounds great! I may have to give these a go! thanks for posting the details. 🙂

No problem - I have a large file full of recipes - some are probably sinful.

Thank you for this - I am going to try it

Well I had my Hunters Chicken at our local last night, as planned. Ate half the chips as usual, then decided to finish them off and see what happened. Two hours later a 4.9, according to my food diary the same reading I had the last time I had that meal at our local in December (5.6 the time before that).

No plans to put chips back on my menu but good to know that they don't seem to be a problem for the occasional meal out.

Martin

I think this is probably what I would expect. If you subscribe to Roy Taylors concept that diabetes is basically your body running out of capacity. Then having low carb diets basically lower you below the threshold for where there is a bit of capacity again. I suspect having chips more often would then fill the capacity again and you'd be back into raising BG.

Which makes some sense, in that we seem to be able to tolerate different foods at different times.

Last time we went I had chips obviously haha! Because I’m naughty.
But my then 8 year old had chicken, broccoli and corn, she likes veg but I was surprised as chips there are very nice ha!

Haha.. that is kind of naughty. You being type 1 can just deal with that a bit better than us type 2's. I think I can maybe handle it once a month or something, but that becomes a bit of a slippery slope back to eating full carbs with abandon. I don't mind doing a few carbs if I'm out to lunch with friends/colleagues, but where I can reasonably find an alternative I always will.
