I am on 1000mg of Metformin twice a day and until this week have not had any of the side effects everyone has been mentioning.

However yesterday and today, besides the rush to the loo 1.5 hrs after taking it in the morning I have felt violently sick - but not been sick.

I also haven't fancied my lunch and just ate it because I know I must.

Well it was nice whilst it lasted - but looks like I will be suffering along with the rest of you - it is bearable though so will keep on!😱

Have you bought an air freshener to combat the gas production? :D Let's hope it works and brings your BGs down.

One of the reasons I don't have breakfast before I leave home is I still sometimes have to rush to the loo with in an hour or two of taking the metformin. The unfortunate side effect will ease in time with the occaisional blip.

You're just weird - oh no, sorry, we decided you were special didn't we 😉 :D

I hope that the side effects subside soon, it's horrible feeling like that. At least with all your running training you'll be able to make it in double quick time when nature calls! 😱

Ha Ha Alan,

Yes special - not weird!
My PT actually said the other day I am weird as I run faster up hills than on the flat! The only way I can do hills is to sprint them!

There is no way I would take the metformin just before a run - I would do 5k in 1 minute if that was the case!!

Alison - no issues with the gas yet - I guess I have that to look forward to!

Caroline - I too have porridge at work now - and am fine having that but once I have the tablets my appetite goes until tea time - when I take the next batch!!

I'm much better running up hills than on the flat or downhill, possible due to spending the early part of my running career seemingly running up endless hilss in and around Sheffield! So I must be weird/special too! 🙂

Theres no argument there Alan!

Lucy so sorry to hear that the metformin is making you run .... I am dreading having to go on metformin as I already have a very delicate digestion. not much I can do but sending you a hug x

((((Lucy))))

I'm increasing from 1000mg to 2000mg a day very gradually...😱

I found that by cutting out fatty or fried foods and dramatically reducing flour based carb foods (bread, pasta etc) the side effects are not as bad.

A small bowl of porridge or bran flakes for breakfast helps my plumbing behave.

Your body might react differently.

I am newly diagnosed are are taking Metformin but easing them in gradually. Like you i have been suffering with running to the loo and feeling sick and i feel that my appetite is not as good as it was since i have been taking the Metformin and the gas is terrible lol as everyone vacates the room lol.

Val x

Hi Tez,

Like you I have the porridge for brekkie but still the effects. I am also on a very healthy low gi diet.

One thing I do notice though is when I have a mug of black decaff coffee it seems to set things off much quicker - if you get what I mean:D

I am going with the view that it will all die down when my body gets used to it.

Off for a run this afternoon again, so hope everything settles by then.🙂

Hopefully it settles down for you quickly Lucy. I'm only on 1g per day, so I suspect this is why I'm not getting as many symptoms as others.

I still get once or twice a week a little bit of metformin belly (not a case of a 30 second sprint, more an achy belly), I have not yet managed to tie it down to any particular food yet. It does mostly seem to hit on weekends when my routine is a bit different - usually breakfast is at least 1 hour later (and I take one metformin then).

I've seem the same as Tez, that some fatty foods seem to affect it a little also - stir frys, prawns. But interestingly not nuts

I've been doing the low carb thing since Dx and, all things being equal, it certainly helps, even with my odd form of diabetes.
