.....this game anymore, I don't want this thing called diabetes I just wish it would go away! I've been shopping this morning and now I am so depressed, Turkish Delight-not allowed Toffee Popcorn-can't have it Cream Cake- no no Jam Doughnuts-out of the question. It feels like my life is over, its not like I have these things everyday but I would like to be able to have them when I want them and just recently I WANT THEM!! Petulant I know but what do you guys do when you want something like that? What do you have?

Yep, that's one of the hardest things to cope with, when you fancy a wee treat and you know you can't have it. I tend to buy something that smells good instead, like a new moisturiser or aromatherapy oil (I have a vast collection courtesy of Boots and Lush). Not quite the same thing but at least it's a treat.

It's a catch 22 situation isn't it? Being on insulin you're more free to eat what you want (within reason) because you can cover it with increased doses, although you have to put up with 4 injections a day. Where as on the other hand when you're on tablets you have the chore of managing your diet much stricter but you don't have to worry about making sure you've got enough needles, insulin, etc on you at all times.

There are always alternatives to Jam Doughnuts and other cakes though, I eat Hartley's No-added Sugar Jelly pots which have no carbs in whatsoever and means I can eat them till my hearts content 😉

i'm 'lucky' that i can have the sweet things i like with a meal. Maybe look at it this way; do you REALLY want the sweet stuff knowing the implications that go with it?

I have nominated Saturday as treat day. Sometimes I have jam doughnuts and sometimes I have a DVD or a CD. The doughnuts are made all the more delicious because I don't have them very often....

As long as you dont want to eat these things everyday you can still have them, its important to relax every now and again.....otherwise we are not really enjoying the relatively short lives we all have..............:D

I've found that by replacing sweet things by savoury I've actually weaned myself off most sweet things and only have them occasionally now. I'vegot a packet of hobnobs in the kitchen that I bought nearly a year ago - bet they've gone off/soggy by now! 😱

Nuts or cheese, or a slice of lean ham 🙂

I suck a sugar free mint. I have on on the go atm.:D

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling like this. I know that it's not fair but you will feel better about it soon. It is difficult not being able to have sweet treats - I still remember that I wasn't allowed chocolate at all until I was 6, and I think that it was a rolo. Nowadays I can but it does either mean that I'm having a hypo or need to inject for it🙄 Try to think of alternative things that you can do such as going for a swim or a lovely hot bath with lots of bath oil or making a meal that is low fat but still delicious, there are lots of cook books with lovely recipes. Or if you really must have something sweet have just a small portion e.g. one square of chocolate or an eighth of a doughnut so that you get the sugar fix without causing too much damage - but make sure that you get rid of the rest of the treat so that you can retrieve e.g. by giving it to someone else or throwing it deep into the bin!

I tend to try and go for less of better things. So for example, I'll go for a few squares of really good organic 80% cocoa rather than a metric tonne of cheap, nasty chocolate. So just as much pleasure without the bad stuff.

I think now its got to the stage I want them simply because I can't have them. It didn't worry me all over Xmas that I couldn't have the chocolate. I also think now that if the doctors don't care why should I?

Dont let it pray on your mind too much, no need to cut every little treat out of your life hun, thinking about it or letting it get to you will make you crave worse, im terrible for it, when im down i comfort eat and its a vicious circle, dont deny yourself i agree with Caroline have a treat day hun, a little of what you fancy does you good eh x

The problem is that you have to care, because it's you that lives in your body and they don't know the half of it most of the time unless they are diabetic too. It is much better to indulge a little than to constantly crave - it's trying to find a good balance whereby you behave most of the time and then risk less than perfect levels now and again to relieve the other stresses. Stick with it Alison, and you will find that balance in time 🙂 As you say, it might actually be that you don't really want them when you try them - I have discovered this!

Thanks guys xx

Alison, you could try a spot of mind-aversion therapy ....
I'm sure you've got some ironing to do? If not, why not iron the OH's Y-fronts - it'll give you a glow of satisfaction and you'll burn some calories in the process.
Better, if the OH is home when you get back, try running around tending to his needs; again, win win win!

(flippin' heck, I'm good at this counselling mullarky, ain't I?)

Only one flaw in that plan Chris..........................I'm single :D Now if I were to have an OH maybe I wouldn't have so much of a problem 😉

Hmmmm I do live on an estate that quite a few Northampton Saints rugby players live on :D

Hey Alison, the same as if ona diet to slim, you should never deny yourself everything. The thing is, your tastes will change after eating nothing too sweet for quite a while, so things that are very sweet won't be such a temptaion.

But on the whole, I reckon ONE treat a week - you're worth it, and it gives you something to look forward to, and you don't feel so desperate! I do it on a Sunday!
