Hi guys,

Know you will be able to help me on this one,why is it a bad idea to give a diabetic having a hypo a mars bar? is it to do with the speed of it in your body or something similier?
Reason Im asking a mate of mine was having a chat with another saying her sister in law was having a hypo and she gave her a mars bar, I was going to say something but forgot the reason why it is a bad idea

Cheers all x

Hi Steff i think its because the sugar in a mars wont get into your blood stream quick enough to help with the hypo. Shes better of with something with glucose syrup as the body doesnt have to break it down. I think im right anyways 🙂

That's right. The fat in the Mars bar (or any other chocolate) slows down the absorbtion of the carbs, so it won't be fast acting enough. Glucose tables, jelly babies etc are best

Ha thats exactly it Monica I remember now, we talked about it on DAFNE and the course leader actually said chocolate can take as long as bread to be digested in your body. I do find it strange that something very sugary is that slow at releasing carbs, but the you get the strange bgs :(

Steff ive always been told that while mars bar will inital change blood sugar it will peak quick but then dropn again because you need carbs , so if you do eat chocolate follow with some carbs or you could end up hypo again ,unless of course youve done dafne 😉 and rules are different

Thanks girls I can know not look silly when I tell her lol x

It is the fat in chocolate that slows the peak. I've no idea how long it takes to get into your bloodstream but it's not considered a good idea unless there's nothing better available.

For some reason fizzy drinks (with glucose syrup) such as normal coke are about as quick as you can get. Don't leave home without one.🙂
