How stupid do I feel I was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago bye figures were 49 then on the second time 48 the nurse invited me in from the waiting room shouting come on a Mrs diabetes smiling so I really didn’t take it as seriously as I should have she sat me down and said right you’re diabetic and you’re always going to be a diabetic there is no cure tell me to lose weight and go on the course with the diabetic dietician went on the course and that was all about cutting down and we all know we all know about the plate how much carbs protein do you have I lost weight the long doing what I was doing didn’t need medication next time my blood figures were 50 was told doing the right thing I’ll see you in a year and that went on until 2019 when my bloods were 53 all the time you don’t see the same nurse in fact you don’t see specialise nurses in diabetes she said oh should I start you on a little tablet or shall we have another blood test had another blood test and that came back I believe pre-diabetic go forward now to 2020 the The pandemic struck I was still eating what I wanted I was drinking what I wanted also I was just retired and cooking loads of lovely food and having a glass of wine and probably eating and drinking too much my blood test is normally September but didn’t get a call till October by the time waited for an appointment to give blood it was November that came back as 112 my doctor phoned me up to say we need another blood test I couldn’t get an appointment till December in the meantime the practice nurse phoned to say I needed to go into the dr surgery to get test and she was going to start me off with her meter glucose reading meter as it was Christmas got the nurse took the blood then did the glucose meter then the doctor came sent me to A&E where I was absolutely terrified Covid was wild where I was living I need doctor came my doctor has written a letter to explain everything diabetic doctor came Dr came to take blood in the artery and my arm diabetic nurse came in trying to tell me everything it all in they were all in the room at the same time so they asked me to wait in the waiting room which I did for a few hours then was called and was told yeah okay take these tablets and go home go home my own doctor phoned oh great you’re out I am what what do I do with these tablets I asked do I start taking them now oh yeah then said oh I’m off tomorrow I wish I could phone you tomorrow but I’m not in I’ll get the nurse to phone you there is phone me are you okay ask her some questions I’m not sure need to check phone me back and then that was it I spoke to the nurse again for the next week no advice at all I am and also the only questions to ask are the ones that I could think that out and put down and she answered I said to her what what can I eat she said I’m not a dietician I am a nurse I’ll refer you then I supposed to see you to have my blood pressure done but the cases of Covid were absolutely really high where we were so she phoned and we had a phone conversation again no advice just my questions to herPressure in the end on my own machine and said that to a doctor I’ve spoken to the doctors not the same doctor about three times I am now only on the metformin one in the morning and one at night I was on gliclazide but was taken off it after my no last blood readings was had come down to 58 all very pleased with that but still no advice or no conversation Ido have a a dietician who I speak to monthly who’s been a great help Dr tell me my blood test will be in the next six months after talking to my dietician I fell 3 months after reading all the comments on the on here after he put the phone down next thing a different nurse again phoned me up to say that my bloods will be done in three months not six months I feel abandoned at this minute but I still feel so stupid that I didn’t take more interest in what was going on and just carried on as normal do other people feel like thisI can’t thank this forum enough as without it I wouldn’t know what to do I would be lost thanks all again

Goodness! What a rollercoaster you have been on @mage 1

Well done on getting your levels down from 112 to 58. And great to hear that you are keeping in touch with your dietician and getting calls from your nurse.

I got a little lost reading your post, because sometimes I wasn’t sure where the breaks were, but thank you for sharing it and I hope it has helped to pour it all out. It might help other members respond if you put some gaps in between the different sections of your post? There is an ‘edit’ button at the bottom which you can use to change it if you would like to.

Glad to hear that the forum has helped you. Sorry you feel a bit abandoned and not given clear advice from the Drs and nurses, and the different things you are being told about timings can't help either :(

I certainly don’t think you should feel stupid at all. Diabetes can be a lot to get your head around, and it can all feel very complicated and confusing. Be kind to yourself, and try not to give yourself a hard time. Keep in touch with your Dr and nurse, and keep asking their advice.

It might help to write down any questions you have and to have them to look at during phone calls or appointments. Sometimes it’s hard to remember what you wanted to ask in the middle of conversations - so having some reminders can be really helpful.

Hi @Mage - you are not alone. I didn't take it seriously. I had a pre-diabetes alert 3 years ago. I ate healthily for 3 months, got the all clear in the follow up test and then forgot about it. The healthy eating gradually degenerated until Jan 2021 - and HbA1c was 88. I got offered the chance to go on an educational course and turned it down at the time, saying nah, I'm all over this. I did no research on it other than being vaguely aware diabetes was bad.

A glass of wine is fine - as long as it is not a sweet one and a large glass.
If only people were given the simple information that the problem is the carbohydrate. Just cut back on them and you should be OK but there will be tests - then handed a list of low carb foods.
No doom and gloom and lose weight because you are bad - which is what I got.

Hi @mage 1, I think in a way it's harder for pre-diabetics because there isn't the urgency there to do anything drastic about it. I started out at 76 so knew I had to do something immediately! Well done on reducing your levels so brilliantly 🙂
